I finally got the hang of Ring games |

I was a pretty crappy Ring game player, especially since starting to play Real money.
I always preferred S&G or MTT , but due to my Tight game, the blinds kept killing me. I finally discovered what I'm doing wrong in Ring games :
I simply don't sit long enough.
The second problem, is I used to limp in with much more hands then I should have.
I'm just finishing a session of a little longer then 1 hour (still not long enough but much longer then my previous 20 min sessions) , I played only decent hands and I never limped in. Every hand I played, I raised.
I double my buyin in 1 table and got out a little better then even in the second.
Though I still find S&G or MTT more exciting, I can now make money in ring
Well, not lose at least.
I played a total of 113 hands, seen the flop in only 22 hands , got to showdown on only 5 hands..
Since my post flop game is still not that strong, I'm happy of winning most hands on the flop , though I did some wining preflop as well.
Thanks guys for all the advice and help on this board.
Danny

Glad it's working out for you. NL cash is great, and I've recently found that out too. I 3 or 4 table 10NL games on Stars and really all you need to do is sit tight, raise your good hands and make the most out of all the other players mistakes.
After ~5k hands, I'm up around 50$.
So keep it up in the ring games. I agree with you about tournaments being more exciting, but certain convieniences make playing ring games pretty fun as well.

wow, 5k hands to make $50...
Maybe I got lucky, but my +100 hands yesterday got me around $5 up. So if I keep it up in this level, it should only take my 1k....
Didn't get any bad beats , but lost some when tried to bully my way around when I felt a little ahead with half decent card - that was a cheap but good lesson.
I only played on 2 tables, but since I'm pretty new to cash ring games I wanted the chance to get to know the table better.

Hes right $10NL is not particularly difficult. If you just play the cards you can do fine

Remember, not every session is going to be a winning one so wait to measure your success until you have a few more under your belt. Also, I would recommend sticking to only 1 table until your post flop game improves. It makes it easier to monitor the play of others without being bounced away and gives you the chance to plug holes in your game early. Try to take good notes of other players because you know they are doing the same with you.
I prefer SNG's and MTTs to ring games as well, but you have to have the time available and avoid interuptions. For some reason, my wife always seems to come in right in the middle of a crucial hand and distract me. With ring games, you can just fold and sit out without too much consequence.

progress report
My second 1 hour session playing 2 table got me a hugh profit of $0.25, I become much more Aggressive but still play very tight . It came to a point that when ever I went to a pot (always with a raise) most player couldn't wait to get out of the hand. Though I got called few time pre-flop, they usually fold on my continues bet.
Just finished a 30 min session today and made just a little shy of $10 .
Got really lucky with someone trying to muscle me out while I had KK , and board was J T J. I betted $1 on the flop, he called. I checked the turn 8 and he bet the pot - I though about for my time limit and pushed allin . Silly guy called with ATo , he had some outs, but I had more ...lol
next hand, I'm BS and see QQ , button raise 4XBB and I call and another caller. Flop comes 5 4 5 I bet 80% of the top, caller fold, button call - turn come a 5 , I think a little and push some - button fold apparently an AK.
I played few more hands after, even manage to steal a hand with almost nothing (A high) and decided to call it a day.
On the down side, playing ring games totally screw with my MTT - just played 45 player S&G and barely made it ITM (finished 6 with 6 paid)
All in all, with my improve ring payment, and sign up bonus starting to kick in , my $50 deposit is now a little over $60, is it time for me to go up a level from $0.10 NL?

MrDarling, are you playing 25NL on party?
Posted Wed Jul 12, 2006 1:30 am GMT by MrDarling
No, I'm on Fulltilt and playing $0.05/$0.10 blinds NL (is that called $10 NL)
Had a great humbling session the other day. Set on 2 tables , 0.10 and 0.25 NL , played a little lose, continues bet who didn't scare any one and chasing some draws that didn't lead to anywhere and I quickly lost $17 combine.
Shouldn't have played 2 table and definitely not two hands on both tables at the same time....
I should stick in my comfort range and play a table at a time...
That said, last night I join a $1 MTT, 430 players and for a change a decent blind rate (every 10 min) , played really tight and made ITM (45 players) while in top 5 chip leads. But it become to late for me and decided to gamble / throw the chips away. The disadvantage of playing from Israel
