From Cardplayer...

Andy Bloch Takes a Time Out
HOLD'EM

After spotting a marked card, Andy Bloch makes the dealer fan out the deck in an effort expose any more possibly marked cards. Bloch then proceeds to go through the deck and bend all of the cards he believes to be marked. The floorman tells Andy, "Don't you dare do that again." Andy stands up in protest and gives the floor man a lashing for allowing a used deck to begin play in the H.O.R.S.E. event. The floorman warns Andy that if he doesn't calm down or if he bends anymore cards, Andy will be given a 10 minute penalty. Andy then tells the floor man, "Go ahead, give me a penalty..." He then says that he should call the gaming commission about the matter. After expressing his concern, Andy wallks away from the table and takes his punishment.

Annie Duke Not Given A Timeout
Annie Duke just found a marked 5 card on table 149. She proceeded to bend the corner and ask for a new setup. After hearing that Andy Bloch was given a penalty for it, she expressed her concern for how ridiculous it was to punish someone who had not dropped the F-bomb. She believes that the player has a right to take those marked cards out of play, otherwise the casino would just recycle them back into play.

More Marked Cards
RAZZ
Max Pescatori and David Grey found more marked cards at their table, again on Andy Bloch's table. Bloch called the floor manager over again to resolve the problem and there was a discussion as to whether the table even got new cards like they'd asked for. Every other table got a new setup of cards taken out of the original plastic after the first dispute, but Bloch's table apparently didn't and got marked cards again. How ironic.

Marked Cards Turn Up Again
This time there are marked cards at John Hennigan's table as he pointed out a bent Ace of spades. Doyle Brunson and Scott Fischman both voiced their concerns that the table needed new cards and the situation was "terrible." Fischman commented on the situation that "All the cards are marked."

That's pretty wild. I wonder who's at fault here.

It's complete nonsense. Every table should get a new deck and the problem will be solved. It's a 50k event, they should get their act together.

We were talking about it on IRC.

wow... theys pretty gay how they cant just deal with the marks cards by opening a new deck. i mean andy bent most of them right? so shouldnt they have switched it afterwards?

That is truly awful. Tournament directors need a swift kick in the ass for this disgrace. Why has the management at the WSOP been so piss poor the last two years? This is really discouraging.

Casinos rarely use new decks. Cards are sorted, examined and put back into play. These cards might have been a new set up from a $1/$3NL ring game that found their way into the $50k event.

I would not be suprised to hear of brand new cards being used on going. BTW-the dealers would likely hate that.

Anyone hear the story of the African Blackjack players who couldn't lose? The decks that were being used were made by these guys, pre-marked, then shipped to the casinos.

Can't remember the entire story but I'm sure someone here can fill in the blanks.

Here you go Skribbles...hot off the presses... Laughing

What amazes me about this marked cards at the WSOP is the fact that for $10,000 or $50,000 you would think the casino could afford a new deck every once in awhile. I mean look how much rake they get from an average tournament. This is the big times Harrahs...lets treat it like the prestigous event that the WSOP is a break out the new decks or does this event not mean crap to Harrahs?

This is just totally poor management on the part of the casino. A player should have the right to ask for a new deck almost any time as long as a decent reason is given. Marked cards are the best reason I can think of. In fact, new decks should be rung in anyways. With the popularization of a 2 hole card poker game like Hold Em, you're basically inviting any Black Jack mechanic who can mark cards on the fly to use the same methods for another game....a game with lots more players for a dealer to pay attention to and less security scrutiny on him. Not to mention: It's a freakin single deck game! In BJ, a cheat needs to mark lots of cards since he's looking for 10 values and aces and he's got sometimes up to 6 decks in the shoe. In poker, you can just mark some select cards, and combine that with the vast amount of information available in a poker game = more advantage for less work.

Sadly, a lot of casinos today still use plastic cards, which they wash and then later put back into play. Just terrible. I'm a magician and I probably go through 1-3 packs of cards a week just from practising. It's a hobby for me and I manage to afford it. (where do you think my poker money goes?) They have a billion dollar business and can't crack a new pack open?

As for the story about the marked cards being printed by the manufacturer for the casino: I think that's the most recent time that scam has been run, but it was by far not the first time. In fact, back in the 20s and 30s there were a lot of con men and mechanics that would winter in Miami and summer in Denver to take advantage of the tourist crowds. Back then you might have one drug store per town etc., so they would contrive to switch an entire box of legit decks for a matching box of sealed, marked cards. Since everybody was getting their cards from the same place, it was just a matter of getting into the games and waiting for the marked cards to show up.

Since we're on the cheating topic: If you haven't seen the movie SHADE, go out and get it or rent it. It didn't hit the theaters cuz the company that put it out went under, but it's got an all star cast. It's one of the better poker movies out there and it was actually written by a magician. The characters are all named after some of the best card men that have ever lived. Also, the opening credit sequence is just cool as hell to watch. It's just hands and cards doing all those cheating moves that you never get to actually see happen. They're shot from underneath a glass table etc. so you get some really cool angles.

Have you all ever dealt w/ a new deck of cards?

Who do you think is dealing in the WSOP this year. If there are 8000+ people, even in 2 shifts that is 400 dealers. Where are these people coming from? They arent going to have the most experienced people in the world. They will be well trained, but still be mostly rookie dealers. Now you are going to give them new cards to play each session? That is insane.

Regarding the request for new decks. Yes, this should be done if marked cards are found. But in a tournament w/ increasing blinds and limited chips, requesting set ups takes time. The cards need to be viewed, washed, dealt and redealt. There is nothing worse than watching that clock tick on a round when you need to make a move.

Ah, that explains it. Yeah I saw that, the close up work was pretty cool but the poker was HORRIBLE as I remember it. Ridiculous hand after ridiculous hand, (OK it was about cheating but still there's a limit to what you could expect anyone to believe) the old off the table raise bit (where one player says I raise all in plus say a million dollars and then the other player has to actually come up with the million dollars or fold; cash games are never played this way for obvious reasons), the "cheat-off" at the end... some entertainment value but just so no one rents it expecting a poker movie LOL. Interesting post though.

Well, yeah. The movie is more about cheating than it is specifically about poker. But in reality, very few "poker movies" stay true to the rules of poker that we all play by. After all, isn't that what watching all the tourneys on the sports channels is for? Plus, there was TILT, which tried to keep it realistic. For this movie the "I can buy this pot because you don't have enough money on you" was done on purpose because it actually does make the whole movie flow better when you look at the series of cons they pull off. So, Iron is right, it's not "real" poker as we play, but if you can get past that it's an entertaining movie. I figured poker players are usually the type of guys that love con/hustle/Vegas type movies and this one went a little under the radar. Hope you see it and like it.........or, there's enough disclaimer here that you can't blame me Smile
