how do you play a small flush

Posted Sun Jul 16, 2006 5:47 pm GMT by MrDarling
You've got 6s7s , you call the 3XBB from LP.
3 players in. one after you.
flop comes
Js5s2s

what now?
Lets say the pot is 10XBB ,
first player bet half the pot.
what do you do?

Danny

Depends on my stack really, but i would reraise him. He could be trying to thin the field with an A suited and scrap. Don't raise all-in though, you want to give him the opportunity to reraise you if he really thinks he's got you. Then you can fold and keep ur chips.

I would probably alternate about 40% calls and 60% raises. The times you call (I would only call if you have position on him), I would definitely raise on the turn if he bets again, provided another of your suit did not fall on the turn, or if the board paired and you suspect that he bet the flop with a set.

The chances he has a better flush right now are actually very slim. But all sorts of hands might bet here to protect themselves against weak flush draws, or to get more money in the pot. TPTK + nut flush draw is a very strong hand that many players like to bet strongly (although remember that he has only 7 outs against you if he has AsJx). Top two pair is sometimes likely, but not on this board. A set is also a possibility for his hand, although I've noticed that players tend to be less cautious and more aggressive with sets on suited boards, so betting half the pot leads me to believe he doesn't have a set.

If the bettor is the type of player who would bet a lot of hands right here and is likely to put you on a draw if you call and then fire again if a non-threatening card comes on the turn, I would lean toward calling and then raising the turn to win an extra bet, as it is usually worth the risk of giving a cheap card if he bets enough on the turn. If the bettor is someone who would only bet a strong hand here like a set or a pair + nut flush draw, I'd lean toward raising to make him pay for a draw, and to help define your hand (if he re-raises you might have to at least consider ditching, depending on if you're committed or not).

If he's betting with a weaker hand than you (which he almost certainly is), then his bet of 50% of the pot is a mistake based on equity, so even if it's a mistake to give him a card cheaply if he has a draw, it's not a very big mistake, provided he is likely to bet the turn again. Note though, if you have the image of a tight player who slowplays a lot, calling and hoping that he'll bet on the turn is not as good of a play. In that case, I'd suggest just raising now.

lets add more details .

Original pre flop raiser is player 1 - EP
I call from MP
Player 2 call from LP

Player 1 raise on the flop - I actually think he might only have a pair maybe TPTK - why else raise if you got a good high flush.

But player 2 might have a better flush then me?
At least in low level, people seems to really like their suited hands enough to call or even raise pre flop...

I hate calling when i make a small flush, they can drawn out on alot so i like to protect my hand. Unless im heads up , i will always put in a large raise and if someone has a larger flush, you just have to pay them off. The worst scenario is that they call with a bigger flush but if they move in on you its down to your reads of them if you dont want to gamble there.

As a good rule of thumb, if stacks are short to medium, you don't need to worry much about going broke with a low flush vs a higher flush. When you go to deep stack versus deep stack (200+ BBs) you can start worrying.

what are the odds of two player having flush with only 3 suited cards on the board?
What about when there are 4?

I often seen it happen , either in an allin situation that both player have suited cards (like I said, in low level ppl think suited cards are the nuts) or in showdowns...

It happens, it doesn't mean that going broke with a low flush is a wrong, because in such loose games you'll often bump into alot of other weird hands.

Obviously, if there is four to a flush on the board, a low flush is worth far less than with three to a flush flush.

But to say it it easy...if you want to fold a threeflush with 67s and medium stacks, then don't play 67s.

In flop situations above, you are typically dealing with an over pair, top set that needs to be protected, or 2 high cards with the nut flush draw. Rarely are people ever so protective of the nuts on a board like that
