Top pair good kicker

Posted Sat Jul 22, 2006 11:59 am GMT by weirdofreek
I see alot of people on this forum telling others not to get married to top pair. I have won hugh pots taking someones stack when I had them out kicked with top pair, and in cash games, unless the board is scary (flush and straights every where) I will usually not mind putting my stack in w/ top pair top kicker. Tourneys however If I run into a better hand I am done. So this is a big weakness in my tourney play any advice on when to lay down TPTK? I know it depends but since it would be a mistake to lay it down any time someone reraises but I am just looking for some instances when you would lay it down.

Thats what they mean by dont get married to TPTK hands weirdo. You might run into sets or straight draws and if you push with TPTK your standing a great chance of getting beat.
Ask the poor suckers who droped over $$$ to me this morning in ring games when they bet TPTK into my sets... Smile.

But you can't fold it to resistance every time so when do you play it and when do you fold it?

It is entirely based on your read. This is where knowing your opponent plays the biggest role in your decision. Also, stack size is a big consideration too...if you have much more than your opponent, then a lot of times I am more than willing to play for his stack with TPTK. But, if the $$ is deep, you have to be brain dead to commit all your $$ to a hand like this, cash game or tourny.
