Your documentation methods

Posted Sun Jul 23, 2006 3:45 am GMT by Oasis
Hi everyone, I'm new to this community so go easy!

I started playing poker with friends some time ago, and have recently decided to take the plunge and take my game to the next level.

I've read Ken Warren's (feed back on this book will be great) book Ken Warren Teaches Texas Holdem and he talks a lot about documentation. I was wondering if anyone of you could share some of your documentation methods of all aspects of the game, and any further experiences you may with documenting.

Thanks for your time, and happy gaming!

Documentation as in keeping track of how much you win, etc.?

Sorry, to clarrify I meant a poker style journal.

Just interested in some methods that people may use to record certain things such as the outcomes of certain hands etc. So in the end you can look back and see a compiled database of your success with particular hands, amoung other things.

I'm being a little lazy, but just curious as to how the better players go about this.

If there's a hand history I want to save and analyze later, I'll copy it and pop it onto notepad to look at later, and jot down what I was thinking at the time, etc.

Otherwise I keep track of my roll with an excel sheet with time and place, the game, the stakes, the format (cash, tourney, or sit'n'go), my variance, and my new total. I also have a column for short notes on the session.

Thank you diamond for your contribution! Smile

Do you feel it's important for a beginner player such as much self to document anything any more specific then that?

For example, I was planning to making some sort of spreadsheet where I can record things such as when I successfully use raises for different sort of things such as raising to eliminate players (or whatever). Then, I can come back and look at the data later to find possible leeks in my game. Do you think this is important/necessary?

Appreciate any more feed back you may have.

I tried doing that stuff at first, but found that there isn't much time between hands to write stuff down, and it prevents me from paying attention to how the other players play. I only make a few general notations on a player it I think it's worthwhile.

I do have notebook i use for recording how much I make on a daily basis.

I am on a continue learning curve and therefore will always reply hands(or even post on this forum), to find out where i went wrong. This is not on every hand, just the key ones where i either lost alot of money, simply got out played. i do not document specific details about myself-ie, tired, drunk etc,

However, i do make notes on the other players (i'm unsure exactly which question your asking).

the notes i make on other players are as follows;

i note five things.

1. The stake table level and whether it was a cash game or torny.

2. their pre-flop starting requirements in relation to position.
i.e K8 suited late position

3. how agressive they are
i.e had top pair on flop and made pot-sized bet.(this would be a 6)

4. general skill level.
i.e 2/10 (because they called a 20Xbb bet preflop with a pocket three's)

5. How tight/loose they are.

I have various requirements which all fall into a catogory between 1-9.
Cash games have a letter requirement. i.e D=$1/$2

therefore my notes could look like this

D672
KQ suited early raised 4xBB
A7 suited late called

this means i observed the player on $1/$2 cash table
general skill level is 6/9-in my opinion
Agressiveness is 7/9-this means will happily raise BIG
tightness is 2/9-therefore plays very tight.

I would try and stay clear of this player!

(THIS IS NOT A PERFECT SYSTEM, BUT WHEN DECIDING WHICH TABLES TO PLAY ON, I LOOK FOR LOTS OF (for example) A277 or B148, as these players are loose, aggressive and in-experienced.

Oasis,

There are software helping you do this. I'm using Poker Office myself and it really makes things like this easier. It tells you how much you have made with every starting hand in each of the different positions.

Besides that you also get to know your hourly earn, how many hands you've played, how often you raise preflop and much more. Poker Office also has a live tracker which displays statistics on your opponents right at the table.
