I'm living in Washington (I'm in the Navy) right now and I believe online gambling has just recently became illegal in this state. I'm going to buy a new laptop here in a few days and I'm also going to order my first credit card.
I was wondering, if I do not register my computer under my name, and use my orginal home address of Biloxi, MS on my credit card; do you think I can get away with online gambling. But the thing is, I only have access to free wireless internet from the government. I'm not sure if its monitored but I know you can't access illegal sites or porn sites because its blocked.
What do you think?

"Just as one has a moral obligation to obey a just law, he has a moral obligation to disobey an unjust law." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
So see, it would be wrong not to play Poker.
But in all seriousness, I don't think you'd have much to worry about. WA State actually has very little reign over you if you're in the service. If the government is monitoring your computer, it would be the Federal gov't, not the State, and even on the off chance that one of them knows this obscure WA law, I doubt they'd do anything about it.
But do what your conscience tells you.

I live in Seattle and haven't given it a second thought.
Let em catch me before I stop.
They'll slap the wrist, IF, reapeat IF they can catch you.
They don't have access to Poker Stars logs, I use neteller for my deposits.
I'm not worried about it, *knock knock knock*
and will wait until I hear from the state before I stop.

If you're in the Navy, I'd think about it before depositing. What's your security clearance? If it's low now, how will an arrest on your record, even if it's for something as inane as this, effect your chances for promotion down the road? I'm in the Canadian Navy, and I have no fear right now because there isn't a similar draconian law on this side of the border. Give it time, though and governments will see this as a tax stream they haven't tapped and if they can't tap it, they'll shut it down. It's why pot will never be legalized...it's too easy to grow your own at home, unlike tobacco.

Use netteller, keep your billing address as your address in your hometown, and just use WiFi hot spots at cafes.

Right, otherwise there is a chance they can track you by your IP adddress. And if it is from the government...
I am not sure you have something to worry about, but still to be on the safe side and not become an easy target, go to cafes` WiFi to play. Then there will be practically no way to track you down.

The key element of your situation is the government provided access. I'm quite certain the 'Feds' don't condone using their provided services for illegal activities. With you being in the Navy, I imagine your access is via a 'dot mil' or a 'dot gov' address.
I would think long and hard before pursuing the course of action that you are suggesting. I spent a number of years working for the government, and I feel you would be putting yourself in harm's way.
Why not subscribe with an ISP and hook up? That would eliminate the possible negative 'Fed' actions. As for Washington State, I have no response for you there. Lotsa luck in your decision.
