Beginner bank roll + limit question

Posted Mon Jul 24, 2006 2:04 am GMT by Oasis
Hi, just a quick question from me.

I've been reading lots of material on hold'em and have decided to start dabbling in real online poker games. Planning on depositing 25-50 dollars and play some low stakes limit holdem.

However, i'm not exactly sure which client/casino to use and which stakes to play at while i'm in my infant stage of my poker career.

Should I be aiming to play the 0.15cent/.30cent limit games with Hold'em Poker or is starting out with .50cent/$1 games ok with clients such as Party Poker?

Really appreciate any advice you can give.

$50 is not enough to long-haul $0.5/$1. I would probably aim as low as $0.10/$0.20 or $0.15/$0.30, and I'd recommend either Pacific, Paradise, or PokerStars, where the competition seems fairly bad at the micro stakes.

Good luck!

P.S. In general, to play limit you'd like to have about 300x the size of the big bet. For lower stakes, this might go as low as 200, but I wouldn't go below that if you're really looking to play this as your bankroll.

Is $25-$50 all the money you will invest into online poker? I mean, would you deposit more if you went broke?

If you really don't want to lose your initial deposit you have to stay far away from the 0.50/1 game. I would'nt play higher than 0.10/0.20.

What i do which is usually a bad idea is deposit 50 bucks play with it for a week or so and lose it in the lower limit games. However i got about 300 in my 2nd bank account to put in there. The thing is I usually sit down at the .25/.50 NL or .50/1 NL with my 50 and play tighter then a dolphins a**hole and get to about double up then move to lower limits to not burn threw it. Now this is the problem with the micro limits on PS, people are just crazy. Its almost not even real poker, sorta like playing with the fake money. Example would be like what happened last night. Guy sits down with max buy in of 25 bucks and goes all in first hand. I look at my cards and see I have rockets so of course i call. He flips over 2/7suited and ends up hitting a straight.

That kind of stuff doesnt seam to happen really at the higher limit tables. I slowly burn threw the bank I made and usually just end up going on tilt and losing it all.

It's not a bad thing to get a full stack into the middle with aces. Actually that's pretty much the best thing you can hope for.

I've deposited the minimum into Fulltilt , which is $50 and played the lowest levels of NL holdem, which is $0.05 / $0.10 , and I have to say, for my BR these levels are too high.
I'm now slowly recovering from few bad streaks, and many more bad plays by me. and slowly building up my BR as well as making my deposit bonus.

Its actually great, my aim is to play for as long as possible without loosing money - every hand I play advance me closer to my full bonus (which is 100% in FT) It doesn´t mean I got tighter, I actually become much more LAGish now . In those levels I play almost 50% of the hands (which is a lot for NL) and I win about 48% of showdowns - though on most hands I don´t get to the SD , its either I take it on the flop , or I fold.

I plan to deposit more later. However, for the minute I want to play around with $50 in some limit hold'em and see how I go while learning more and more about the game.

If after a while, I am still going ok, I may deposit more and step up to a higher limit. (i'm too scared of NL holdem atm! Razz).

Is this wise?

Ofcourse it's fine.

Site choice is pretty much irrelevant. If you find a nice referral or bonus, go for it. Otherwise ANY site that offers low limits for you is fine.

I've said it about a billion times here, people read it, lose alot of money and then come back and tell me how smart i am. Stick to your bankroll from the start. Or you will lose. I promise you.

Yep, i'm tight as a fish's arse irl when it comes to cash. Smile So i'll be planning to survive with my $50 for as long as possible.

I havn't stopped reading material, so after a while I might assess my game and then consider stepping it up.

I'll let you know how it goes.

One more question and sorry for the double post.

I've come across Fulltilt which I like more then the others. I also have a good referral deal with them; however the smallest Limit game is .25/.50. I'd be pushing it a bit playing $50 wouldn’t I?

There are 0.05/0.10 and .10/.25 PL(pot limit?) games however, but i don't really understand PL and its differences. Is it safe to play those if I am accustomed to limit play?

Cheers.

Pot limit is more like a no limit game than a fixed limit one. It means you can only bet as much as the pot. 50 dollars is ONE buyin to a .25/.50 pl game.

Stick to fixed limit. .25/.5 may be pushing your luck a bit to start out.

bugger, so typically full tilt does not offer a limit game to fit in with my $50 being that the lowest is .25/.50?

Any ideas?

Since you're willing to deposit more later if things would go bad for you I don't see a problem playing .25/.50 FL.

Good luck at the tables! And remember to have a good time.

I was the same way when I first started. NL was intimidating. After 3 months I finally took the plunge, and discovered the ability to protect a hand. It's much easier to read an opponent in NL in my opinion. I will probably never go back.

Good luck. May the pot odds be with you.
