Anyone worried about bill to make online gambling illegal? |

So, my friend freaked me out at work today when he told me that he couldn't log onto cash games at an online poker site... (I think pokerstars)... so I flew home, and well everything was alright. I was wondering what the likely date of the house of reps actually signing the bill and then the president giving him the go. So, well, is anyone here planning to withdraw their funds out of their poker site once they pass the bill? (When is this most likely to happen, btw?)
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

If I am correct, (and I'm pretty sure I am) the Bill has already passed the House, and now it just needs the Senate to approve it. Then the president will sign the Bill into law, he definately won't veto it. Word on the street is that the Senate wants to pass it by the end of the year.
My suggestion is if you're worried about your money, withdrawl it from the smaller poker sites, the big ones will probably refund your money in the event the bill passes.

Relax. The bill doesn't outlaw online gambling. It would legally prohibit credit-card use at online gambling sites and it would prohibit banks from doing electronic transfers with them.

Should we take this as the three best reasons not to move to Canada?... .
I can think of one cute Canadian FEMALE hottie who could change my mind about living there...
Edit: No not Celine Dion...

Flafishy-
Would it prohibit banks from doing EFT's to NeTeller too? That is the bigger issue as I don't believe many US banks do EFT's directly to poker sites anyway.
Thanks,
Shorn

Shorn,
Neteller is a virtual wallet. Neteller is not only used for online poker sites but also to make purchases from E-bay or other auction sites. I can't see them being able to make it illegal to EFT Neteller. It has numerous uses and not just poker sites.

I agree. But, the bill could try its best to reach through to Neteller and find out where those EFT's end up. And, it may make it more likely that those of us who do somewhat large EFT's through Neteller back to the bank will end up getting audited more frequently too.
I hate all politicians. All they do is waste time and spend too much fu*king of my money. Maybe they should do something useful like FIX THE GD ROADS IN THE COUNTRY.
Grrrrr....

Neteller is a Canadian company. Yanks can't touch it.

They can't fix the roads...they are too busy screwing up the rest of the world.
You know why politicians only have sex with the female on top?

Actually the bill is aimed at sites like Neteller and Firepay. Most if not all of the US credit card companies no longer allow direct gaming site depostis and now they are going after the websites also. Ebay has been lobbying for this bill the whole time because it would knock out the competition for Paypal. Get rid of the US gamers and Neteller begins to collapse.
I really can't believe how few people really know anything about how our government works. Yes, the house has passed A bill. The senate has to also pass a similar bill then a committe from both sides get together and put the two bills together they are voted on again and then sent on to the President for signing. Currently the senate says their version of the bill is not even on their radar so it will be some time.
However, this is a real concern. In a year or so they are going to be getting aroudn to it and then it will happen. Part of what they are pushing on this bill is that this is a security thing because they can not track the movement of money outside the US once it hits a site like Neteller. So they are trying to outlaw that use so they can keep an eye on everyone and their money. In the process they can say they are keeping up their moral values by fighting gambling, which of course all of them take part in anyway. So give it a year and it is here.

I'll have an offshore bank account by then.
actually, that just might be the loophole. You will see more online banks like ING. Then again, Netteller is sort of like that, but there will be some new way around it.

Repeating what UrAteUp said. Neteller can't be touched without breaking about nine international trade laws. All this bill can do is stop direct transfers/credit-card charges to online gaming sites.
And as I said in another post, this whole issue will be a house of cards when one of the gaming sites that also sells merchandise backs a lawsuit challenging it on the basis that the US cannot do anything to block people from purchasing legitimate things in a non-embargoed country.
Bottom line is that this whole issue is a lot of bluster with no real substance.
