Getting Better

Posted Wed Jul 26, 2006 7:18 am GMT by Rio
Well, I played the $300 Free Roll and the $150 Free Roll on Party last night. 6:30 and 7:30. I did better in the $300 Free Roll by coming in 550ish out of 10,500 players and winning a whopping $.12. That is twelve whole cents added to my bankroll for 2 hours of playing. I got kind of tired of things after that and let my game slip in the second free roll. I was actually playing both of them simultaneously for about an hour.

It is nice to see some progress though. I have loosened up and am winning more chips rather than staying at about the starting amount. I hit a few good tables that I could really take people's chips, but then, bnag, they move you.

Congratulations on your winnings, Rio, but I agree with other posters who claim freerolls should be avoided. Assuming the second tourney has taken you an hour (ballpark figure), you've spent three hours to make 12 bucks without investing any. I'm sure you've had a great time, but I doubt you would take on a job that pays a salary of four bucks an hour.

This weekend I played in a 5 dollar NL freezeout and I came 11th in a field of 250. With the top 40 paid in a structure I was unaware of, you can imagine I was fuming when I walked out with 15 bucks, representing 1% of the total prize pot. I won 10 measly bucks after toiling for three hours.

Freerolls attract players who make the boldest moves, which often leads to you comprimising your style. In that sense, I don't think they are a good investment for any further ambitions in poker.

Yours truly.

Well, I think if you want to get a feel for the game for free, Freerolls are much better than using play money. In fact, in a 1000 person Freeroll the play often becomes fairly decent when you're down to about 200. IMHO, if you can wait out all the maniacs and battle it out later on you'll find yourself in a decent poker game. Sure people will take a few more risks but often people who make it that far are serious about attempting to win so they're often choosing their hands wisely, folding when needed, etc.

I'm not saying Freerolls are amazing to learn from but IF you really do want to get in some free practice they are much better than the free ring games - especially if you can last past the maniacs, call machines and the like.
