$25NL hand

Posted Wed Jul 26, 2006 3:47 pm GMT by Gunslinger
Villain 1 in BB (bigdoggynizz) is extremely loose, VP$IP of 76% after about 50 hands, he's also fairly aggressive, picking up a lot of pots. Villain 2 on the button (Y2K2000) is also loose (VP$IP of 45% in the same period), and has seemed like a pretty mediocre player.

Looking back at the hand, I think my flop raise was too small. After the two callers on the flop, what is my line on the turn?

Hero bets about $10

Pot it.

Bet again, at least 1/2-3/4 pot. Thats my opinion. I don't think your behind here but that $1 bet looks to me like he was trying to lead to keep the pot in odds for a drawing hand.

Pot it here or a little more, such that the rest of your stack will be around the size of the pot on the river so you can get all of it in there, unless a spade falls (and even that you'll probably still have the best hand).

What does everyone think of the flop raise? I didn't want to blow everyone out of the water, but it might have been a little cheap for any flush draws. And am I seeing monsters if I was afraid of a set, with that action? I thought I was way ahead or way behind here, and with two opponents sticking around, I was leaning toward the latter. But with how loose they were, they could have just had any K or any T. I'm new to cash games, thanks for the responses.

I don't mind the raise on the flop, you played it fairly soft but you built a pot and gave yourself a chance to fold if you got some serious playback.

Top 2 pair is often good, even given the number of people in the pot. Flush and straight draws might try to semi bluff. Since the player who lead out for $1 mini raised preflop, it's somewhat alarm bells since the double bet is often a PP. Fact is you saw the flop despite the raise, you flopped about the best hand you could expect.

Raise here, 2/3 to the pot, time to push out the draws or at least give them a bad price, if someone's got a set, you still have outs. Checking in this spot is about the worst thing you can do IMO, giving free cards to any draws.

If you don't improve as you often won't, and no scare cards come out, no 9,A or spade, and you still aren't sure where you are at, check and prepare to call anything reasonable, but honestly you start looking for sets in a money game and someone will give you a reason to fold most of the time.

I think you should have raised more on the flop as your raise of $2 gave him close to immediate odds to call with a flush and overwhelming implied odds to do so. I find that the only way to combat these types of players is to bully them back, so don't let him off cheap to a crappy two pair or other hand that could beat you. Also, if he does call the larger flop raise, you can adjust your play from then on, i.e., yu get more information about his hand and can make beterr turn and river decisions when the bigger $$ is at stake.

The turn is a complete blank, so I ot it there too based on how you played the flop. If he comes over you, then you probably have to let it go unless you want to play for all your chips on the river regardless of what comes (and with your hand, I wouldn't want to).

Thanks for the responses. As it turns out, the pot on the turn was over $12, and both villains had less than that left. So, once I decided that my hand was probably the best, the only choice was to put them all in:

GunslingerZZ: bets $10.85
Y2K2000: calls $8.30 and is all-in
bigdoggynizz: calls $10.85 and is all-in
*** RIVER *** Six of HeartsTen of SpadesKing of SpadesFour of Diamonds Nine of Clubs
*** SHOW DOWN ***
bigdoggynizz: shows Queen of DiamondsJack of Hearts (a straight, Nine to King)
GunslingerZZ: mucks hand
bigdoggynizz collected $4.85 from side pot
Y2K2000: shows Queen of ClubsJack of Diamonds (a straight, Nine to King)
bigdoggynizz collected $18.05 from main pot
Y2K2000 collected $18 from main pot

I got all my money in as a four to one favorite, so I did my job, and I know in the long run, those large pots will come my way. I did wonder if there was any way I could have played it differently to know more information on the turn, or get a better read of my opponents. The advice here will definitely help me in more deep stacked hands. Like I said, I've very recently jumped into cash games, I've bankrolled myself for $25NL, and I'm charting my sessions, so I'm learning. Thanks, everyone, for your help.

So the first guy was getting 2.5-1 and the second was getting 3-1 on their money. Both misplays on their part. So you got both of them to call at the wrong price, thats pretty much all you can do. Sucks that you lost but NH.
