Long Post: My 1st Freeroll - Feedback!

Posted Wed Jul 26, 2006 11:06 pm GMT by mooseontheloose
Well this is going to be a long post but I'd love some feedback. I've been 'playing' poker for probably a year but have never really put the effort into learning How to play. I knew the basic rules to success but never studied the game or focused when I played (I'd make dumb calls not knowing they were dumb). Well, I just recently decided to make the effort and tonight I played in my first Freeroll over at Doyle's. I'm going to post a few hands (using Doyle's summary, sorry) and I'll post info about it below and if you guys could, I'd love some feedback. I'd appreciate feedback on my good/bad moves and whether my bet amounts looked good.

I'll give you the rundown of my placing at the end.

Did I play this too agressively? He called my preflop raise so I assumed he got nothing of that or had 77 or 66 but I strongly doubted it. AA he would've reraised I'd like to hope. I started betting into him and I was a little wary of his calling, but he seemed to be chasing and making calls with moderate hands earlier so I decided that he was either on a draw or he was simply calling to make a push at the river. How was this hand?

Here I was obviously afraid of the flush draw and decided if he wanted to see that last card he'd have to pay for it. I didn't expect his hand to be so weak but again, was I over-agressive?

Okay, I KNOW this was misplayed and I should've laid it down because I was thinking I was behind but my hunch was he had nothing due to his play previously. I put him on a draw but he didn't even have that and got saved on the river. I know I should've let it go, it just bothered me that my hunch on him was correct and I lost so I wanted to post this to confirm my mistake. Should I have bet the turn? I wasn't sure exactly what to do there. On the river I almost felt commited to calling but maybe that was my own pride, wanting to see if I had in fact royally messed up.

Was I again over-agressive? I'm still not sure why he called the preflop but on that flop, when he bet, I wasn't sure exactly what to do. My head told me he has something like 44 or 1010 BUT I'd watch him bluff out someone two hands before and decided my Ks were probably ahead for now.

Okay, well I play quite tight, not playing bad hands unless I'm the BB usually. I have some things to share and ask, sorry this is so long. My play is tight, not over-tight but tight and when I go in I push hard. I do this when I think I am ahead and I try to use my 'tight' image that I likely build to push people off pots. Sometimes it works, sometimes not but I almost always semi-bluff so I have outs in case I'm too agressive and get read as so.

1) Sometimes it will just kill me letting hands go. I had a HUGE problem in the middle of the tournament getting cards. I saw 72o, 63o, 93o over and over and over. I got AA, KK, QQ, 77, 55 and that was it for my pairs but I got none outside the first and last 30 minutes. How do you stay focused and not play garbage hands when you're laying down the nuts?

EX1. I throw down 98o in EP and the flop would've given me the nut straight.

EX2. Fold 42o and flop is 443, would've won with the set.

Those 2 were actually back to back. I know I did the right thing folding, but how do you avoid making careless mistakes when you're getting horrible hands?

2) One problem I have sometimes if not knowing exactly how to read a situation post flop if I have overcards and the flop doesn't help. Often I can play it properly but sometimes I'm unsure.

EX. AKo, raise in LP and get 1 caller who previously limped. Flop is 88Q and the guy comes out with a pot raise. To me I just didn't know what to read that as. I was thinking he likely has a Q, possibly something like KQ and I ended up folding to his raise on the flop. Was I right here or was he overbetting?

ANYWAYS...

I'm REALLY sorry for this monster post, I just am very proud of how I did and wanted to improve. This being my first freeroll in a Very longtime and the first poker I've played with anything at stake since trying to improve my game I was very happy.

Out of 1000 people I ended up placing 25th, in the money at top 27 got paid. Sure it's only $0.50 but I was very pleased with how I did as I felt I played well and one hand killed me. I was at or above the average chip stack for most of the tournament, in Top 10 at one point and if I'd won the hand that crippled me I would've been Top 5. Somehow Doyle's couldn't retreive the hand that killed me so here it in from memory.

Dealt AKo in MP, lead out with a bet of 10,000 (blinds at 3200) and get one caller. Flop comes A73 rainbow (1 heart) and I bet 15,000, he pushes all-in and I decide to call. He flips over Ah10h and breaks my heart as turn is a J and river is a 10. After that I was down to 4000, was able to double-up on pocket 7s and went out next hand with A6s (lost to kicker of A7s)

So over all it was a great night and I think I learned some things about my game and gained some confidence. Will need to do well in a few more as $0.50 isn't going to get me far lol, but anyway.

Sorry for this massive post, thanks to any that read and respond!

Bump, anyone read this yet with some comments?

(P.S. I know Freerolls are crap but I strictly played as if it was real, it made it tough to win pots at times but I don't want to develop bad habits)

Oh if this is the wrong section, please move it Smile

Same day bump ?

Anyway, you did well to last so long on a freeroll.
How can you ask if you are too aggressive if the players keep calling you? Especially in freeroll, people will call with rags and you have to take advantage of it when you got the cards.

Its pretty normal not to see good cards for so long, and you simply have to play them when you have them and lay them down when you don't.

Good luck

Sry bout the bump hehe, was just anxious for feedback.

Anyway, yeh that is what I do but the last 2 MTTs I've been in I've had brutal hands (1 I didn't see a single PP and my only double face-card hand was AQo). I think I probably need to loosen up in the beginning of these tournaments. I find once I get into later stages if I have at least chip average I can do very well because I'm ahead of the blinds, etc. But if I can't get the cards early I often struggle, looking for double-ups. But I suppose I'm a little too tight at times usually living off blinds. Gotta vary my play a little more Smile
