What kind of mood would you be in if this happened to you on day one of the wsop....
"Ryan Fisler re-raises his opponent all-in on a board of 7 7 5 10 8 . His opponent quickly calls and flips over 10 10 , for the second nuts, a full house, 10's over 7's. Fisler then flips over 7 7 for quad 7's. Not only is his opponent in shock, but now he's left with only $900 in chips. After this hand, Fisler is sitting with roughly $16,000."
That hurts.

Vyni isn't playing in the WSOP ME. He is being a great guy and letting others know it has started and where they can follow the action at. Well and he reported that first bad beat.
Hey Vyni...any mention of a bad beat jackpot for the ME?....

No vyni at wsop, but Adam and Sid are there.
I'm just throwing intresting highlights on here from CP as I see them.
Would have been nice to compile a list of actual names of all THPers that went to the me, so that we could track them all. Oh well, good luck to all our guys

Well Adam and Sid Lamberto we know....
I have it on good authority that "sinc" the winner of the thp freeroll, may have a last name with that as part of it
um... Casey ATB is there, if anyone remembers that. He won it in that freeroll a looooong time ago? Anyone want to be a detective and figure out his name?
Carson Cashman isn't in it? =/

I think Casey refused to give his name, unfortunately.

Casey is not Carson: Carson didn't go this year. Sid is there in his place.

I just had to post this hand from the WSOP...
Jack Mahalingam is all-in for $5,000 and is called an opponent in late position. Mahalingam shows 8s8cl and his opponent has 5h5c. The flop is 6s5s5d and his opponent flops quads. The turn is a 9s giving Mahalingam a gut-shot straight flush draw (his only way to win). The river is the 7s giving Mahalingam the straight flush and the hand.
If that were me, I think I'd eat my own arm

WTF????? You call with 8 high in the first hour or so of the WSOP? What is this, a freeroll?
| Quote: | | On a flop of 10club7club5spade, Tim Rod bets $300 and his opponent raises to $600. Rod calls and the turn puts the 3club on the board. Rod again bets out with $1,500 and is again raised by his opponent to $4,000. Rod calls and the river puts the 3spade on the board. Rod pushes all-in and his opponent immediately calls. Rod flips up KclubQclub for a turned flush. His opponent says, "Do I have a straight flush? Oh, no I don't," as he shows 8diamond6spade for 8-high. |

Minh Nguyen is eliminated from the tournament after his chips were blinded off. He has still not arrived at the Rio.
WTF how does a pro let him self get blinded out of the WSOP
Dan Harrington is eliminated from today's event. He was greeted by a round of applause as he stood up and walked away from his table. Mike Sexton's QQ beat Harrington's J7 when the board brought a fourth heart on the river.
but at least anouther pro took him out

Did you all hear that before they started the Day1A tournament they made everyone who was wearing anything that was a poker .com type of logo had to either cover the logo or take off what ever had that logo? Cardplayer had some video on it a little bit ago. Apparently when you sign the contract to play in the event, there is a line about not wearing those items during the event. The Cardplayer folks were laughing about it because as they said, over 85% of the people there had something like that on their person.
Posted Sat Aug 05, 2006 10:32 pm GMT by mooseontheloose
heh, isn't this the kind of hand that makes you want to cry if you're one of those in the hand?
| Quote: | Two players, Bill Robertie and Chris Martin, are all-in preflop and are called by Weikai Chang and Adam Bragar making a main pot of $375,000 and a side pot of $120,000. The flop comes 5 3 2 and Chang checks. Adam Bragar pushes all-in for his remaining $310,000. Chang eventually calls, after much deliberation, having all three players covered. Bragar shows Q Q , Robertie flips up A A , Martin turns over J J and Chang refuses to immediately flip. Chang eventually flips, showing 10:spade:10:club:, way behind. The turn puts the 9 on the board and the river brings the 10:diamond:, giving Chang a set of 10's to take the hand to a cacophony of cheers and moans at the table. Chang eliminated three players and takes down a pot of more than $800,000. Chang now sits with $1,350,000. |

Posted Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:19 am GMT by mooseontheloose
Check this out, just as crazy as the last I posted!
| Quote: | With a board of 9 7 2 J , there is $250,000 in the pot with Ryan Nathan all-in. Rick Mombourquette ($455,000) checks to Rich Lee ($1,063,000), who bets $150,000. Mombourquette declares all-in, and Lee calls. Nathan shows 7 7 , Lee reveals 9 9 , and Mombourquette flips over J:spadeJ:heart:. All three players in the hand have a set. The river is the 5 . Nathan is eliminated, and Mombourquette takes the pot. Mombourquette now has $1,160,000, and Lee has $608,000. |

Apparently, they're going to play down to the final 9 tomorrow and take a day off on Wednesday, since they're a day ahead.

I think its pretty clear what I was suggesting there supa, that the big field has proven too much for more of the big names to make the final table as had been suggested before.
But you're right. One has made it: you go ahead and focus on that. Sigh.

but how many of the "big names" made it ITM?
Also, the fact that the FT is full with unknown doesn't suggest lack of ability.
Loads of those kids get their training playing poker online , like the rest of us! Making it to the FT shows at least some sort of ability.

The 8K + field is definately a factor in the lack of big names at the top, this has been shown in previous years also, however, Just because the winner may be an unknown doesn't validate a luck over skill argument. After all, Seidel made 2nd in his first year, lederer final tabled too and correct me if i'm wrong but didn't Stuey win it at his first attempt?
Sure the luck factor in such a big field increases, it makes it incredibly difficult for 100 or so 'top pros' all to make it thru the field.
You just have to look at the achievements of Raymer and Hachem since their wins to see that altho these guys were unknown when they won, they have no shortage of skill and can actually play a little. (We'll ignore Moneymaker for the sake of this argument *cough*)
I have been following the updates and as far as I can see Jamie Gold's chipstack has been won by making great moves and having the best hand, I can't think of 1 hand where he has majorly sucked out on someone to significantly increase his stack. This guy can play.
All arguments of luck over skill will be resolved when Ritchie, I mean Allen Cunningham wins it all tho. This guy's achievements in tourney poker are MAJOR. As are his credantials in coming thru 1000 + felds to reach final table.
Things have changed since there were 100 pros and 10 amateurs fighting it out, anyone can get lucky and win a tourney over the course of a week, the challenge is, maintaining that over years.
Posted Wed Aug 09, 2006 2:14 pm GMT by vyni
Ugh there were a few good articles and quotes I read on him an the wsop yesterday, but dont remember where they were at. Anyways here's the cardplayer interview with Gold. He came to the wsop this year on team bodog.
Of the articles I've read, he started holdem about 2 years ago with help from Chan. He's played regularly at the casinos in LA and taken part in a few tourneys (leading to that lifetime earning stat posted above).
Of the me results, I'm not saying that these guys arent good. In fact I believe they're damn good: you dont come through that field on just luck. In a tourney this long... well that would be one heck of a lucky streak.
What I find most intresting is that you have had many of the bigger names in poker more or less discrediting the online poker players. References to 'internet punks', etc. One of the quotes that I cant find now was of one of the voices of the wsop stating that they do not believe that the known pros are truely that far ahead.
In the circuit event I watched the other evening, Negreanu remarked on cammera in regards to skill, that at any point, any player can beat him, but in the longer run, the skilled players win more. This is exactly the point: its a once a year event.... the run is not long enough for most of the cream to see the top. To look at any individual player by the number of bracelets he wears... is this not also product of the volume of tourneys played? The average player simply does not have the finances to participate in that many major tourneys: in each of which gaining credibility as a pro.
Online tourneys are alot different than live tourneys of course, but the major difference is the face to face reads on players. To say an online player can not see success in a live game.... I'm sorry but reading a persons tells face to face requires only attention to detail and some experience playing that person. Yes that skill develops over time, but that skill assists you as a good player, not defines you as a good player. imho that is. And yes I know of Brunsons remarks, and I pray that should I ever meet him in a mojor tourney that he puts it to the test. Go ahead, play any hand. Please. Pretty pretty please.
Myself, I'm a poker novice that frankly takes offense when the best players heads get a bit too big. Hellmuth busted day one, and there reportedly was cheering and applause from the tables. Some glad they didn't have to play him, and surely many simply glad they wouldnt have to trip on his ego... which showed up late again anyways. Yes, he's very good, but he's also the perfect example of a player too full of himself.
For the record before I'm incorrectly corrected on it: Gold is not a product of online play, nor is this post arguing online verses pros specificly. Just of unknowns verses pros. I personaly love the looks of the final table, and Golds got some work to do: if he lets too many of those chips fall Cunninghans way, he's in trouble. A bit over 28% of the chips at that final table sit in front of Gold right now, and Cunninghams holding almost 20%, it could be suggested hes already in trouble. But any unknown can come from behind here too, which would be great. I'm liking it
Posted Wed Aug 09, 2006 2:40 pm GMT by mooseontheloose

As a side note, I just noticed that you don't even need to make the FT to make $1,000,000 this year. Insane.

this looks terrible>
60. Paul Wasicka moves all in from the button for $3,170,000 and Michael Binger calls from the big blind. Binger turns over Aheart9spade but Wasicka shows AheartJclub. The board comes AclubAspade8spade5club10club and Paul Wasicka has doubled up.
before this binger doubled up through cunningham,.... then proceeded to give those chips back calling them away with A9... but to the wrong person.. bet cunningham was sick.. on the face of it it looks like a horrible play.

That little parade of champs they just did, Scotty walks in with a beer bottle in his hand.... when he walked off, he was holding a cup.
I'm guessing here because the beer he held up was not a milwaukee's best? That's funny.
eh I just noted I put this in wrong thread... oh well.

omfg, kim goes all in with jj, gold calls with qq and takes kim out. golds stack..... wow. kim was second stack!
I can't believe Kim pushed... nor can I believe Gold called it!

Paul Wasicka $14,560,000
Allen Cunningham $13,680,000

That was one sick bluff Wasicka put on Cunningham...
And wtf was that banter from Jamie when he came over the top of Allen?

gunslinger... i think i love you.

Jamie might win this, but Jesus that guy is a luck box...

Cunningham finished 4th.

I can't believe that. To call 6.5 million more because he THOUGHT he had a 50-50, as though he can put Allen on that hand.
Awful.
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 4:32 am GMT by vyni
We can't knock Gold much on that one, he's been playing decent tourney poker. In the last 30 minutes, how many times have we seen cunningham push. If I had been sitting in Golds seat, with Golds stack, looking at KJ, I'ld probably have risked 6.5 mill to get rid of Cunningham too. If he held AA, KK, well he doubles up but is still nowhere close to my stack. Golds just dominating.
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 4:33 am GMT by jonesyb
gutted. cant believe alan is out.
i hope jamie doesnt win.
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 4:51 am GMT by Oasis
It's sad how everyone was so excited when Allen was knocked out. A force to be reckoned with and the other 2 SS's were just glad as hell that they bumped up notch pay-wise.
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 4:53 am GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
Oh don't get me wrong, Jamie is whooping on that table, playing his chip lead wonderfully, mostly because the other guys are too chicken to engage him.
But with his ability to take 95% of the small pots, WHY would you want to give the most dangerous player at the table a chance to double through on a 50-50, especially when there's a decent chance that you're dominated?
I admit, I first overreacted because he took Allen out, and I was mad.
But I still think that was a very poor play on his part.
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:07 am GMT by jonesyb
did paul wasicka just fold an open ended straight flush draw?
oh dear...
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:07 am GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
God that guy can hit some sick cards... 7 right off the bat.
If Paul really folded an 87 of spades, he should stop playing. But I guess that much cash can mess with your head. How can you NOT call with 87 of spades right there?
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:47 am GMT by vyni
All over, Paul called all in with pocket tens against golds top pair queens...
Nice lil f bomb dropped by gold after it was over in regards to the size of the pile of cash on the table side there. lol
Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:53 am GMT by vyni
I think Wasickas fold of the 78 was more playing not to lose, than playing to win. May have read Binger to call and wanted to bow out for a lock on second place. 6 mill verses 4 mill.
Golds win in the end was less about his play, and more of the flaws in Wasickas play. He punked out too much against the stack imho. Of course it was a long shot for him anyways, his 12k against 78k entering heads up.
Be intresting to see starting on the 22nd what those hole cards were in some of those plays, like on Wasickas push against cunninghams raise.

I'm still steaming that Paul Wasicka laid down 8 7 ...

I'm still amazed by Alan's call on the river with A9 high against Gold's bluff.

Just watched Jamie Gold in an episode of "Live at the bike" playing 10-20$NL (I think that was the blinds) 8 months ago. He lost 5000$ in 2 hands when drawed out on. He just left the casino, crushed. Anyone think he has gotten over that beat now? :D
