mom: why do you continue to play poker? don't you know how much luck is involved in it?
me: less than you would think
mom: i think your wrong
me: then why do the same 5 guys make it to the final table of the WSOP every year? Are they the five luckiest guys in america.
yes i know. with the big fields of the WSOP now adays the same 5 dont make it every year. but she doesnt know that. and i thought you all would get a laugh out of this. btw she shut up about it and said. "its your money. have fun."
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Rather than recycling the Rounders line, you could have explained it differently.
If Poker were all luck, there would be no such thing as a "professional," or if there were, they would live in the gutter rather than mansions because if Poker is all luck, they must be degenerate gamblers. A better way to phrase what you said would be, "then why is it that professional players win 90% or more of the events throughout the year, and why is it that some particular players make it back to the finals again and again, while some players never make it at all?"
Really, the same 5 guys made the FT every year only for the first few years of the WSOP's existence. And that's mostly because there were less than 100 participants.

So you lied to your mom. You should be ashamed of yourself. Buy her some flowers with your winnings.

There are no poker players that live in the gutter?
Posted Sat Jul 29, 2006 3:27 pm GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
Actually, I have a better idea.
Pull your mom aside and take out a quarter. Say you'd like to flip a coin with her for money. Every time it comes up heads, you'll give her $1. But every time it comes up tails, she has to pay you $2. Ask if her if that sounds like gambling. When she says no, explain to her that Poker is not much different. Based on how you play the cards and how intelligently you bet, you can set up many situations where you stand to make twice as much as your opponents.

Better than having a WIFE nag you to stop playing. At least MOM can't threaten to withhold pxxxy.

It amazes me the turns these threads take!
Btw, Mark Twain on the subject of gambling and luck (based on personal experiences from Mississippi Riverboat poker--the beginning of everything) had it right from the get-go. The argument raged all the way 170 years ago that skill was not a factor and he makes his point convincingly and with a gift for humor I will always envy. Read Life on the Mississippi.

My mom is also very worried about my new poker hobby , and I'm 36.
Luckily my wife support my new hobby but keep telling me I need to Show her the money soon or else .
Most people still see poker as a dangerous game played by gangster in dark allies with loads of booze on the table and people betting their entire incomes on one hand.

You know the best way to get the wife off your back about it? Show her a couple of Benjamin's every once in a while and tell her to go buy herself something. The capital you gain from giving her a gift from the "Poker Fund" goes a long, long way.

Damn straight! Where do I find that game?????
I've been looking for it for 35 years, although I'd settle for a room full of rich guys with a bunch of stoogies and floozies in attendance. All I can seem to find are doctors, lawyers, dentists, contractors, small businessmen, electricians, accountants, bond traders, college kids with science majors, and drop-outs who were National Merit scholars. Give me some used car salesmen, at least!!!
I am seriously tired of playing for big money at tables where the average IQ is 138.

trying to make me feel like an idiot?
Posted Mon Jul 31, 2006 7:59 pm GMT by mindgame
lol,
not at all. But I am increasingly dismayed by the intellectual acumen of my opponents. Yes there are the occasional reprobates and outright losers, but in the main you must take the money from very shrewd and frequently accomplished people who have come for the sole purpose of lightening your wallet. Most of the people I play are NOT in the casino for an evening of fun.
Online is even worse. The average young computer owner is above average in intelligence, internet savvy, and quite adept at carrying on 8 conversations at once (playing as many tables is a small stretch). Many online players have a far from typical comprehension of combinations, permutations, probabilities, and statistics. Computers are tools to them and they not only use them well, they are willing to work hard to learn the game.
Frankly, that sucks.

Though your odds at winning against shady opponents are bigger, your odds of getting out of the room with their money alive are smaller..
So count your blessings

Perhaps so, but if I were completely averse to risk I wouldn't play poker at all!

I talked with my mom about that 15000 times... I convinced her after a while. Im just 16 and she didn't like me using 90$ on pokerbooks. Her attitude is more open to poker now, but slot machines she doesn't like to much, so I'll keep quiet about my 600$ slotmachine win this weekend
Posted Tue Aug 08, 2006 2:03 pm GMT by LeafsFan1122
Where does a 16 year old get a 600$ slots win?
Posted Tue Aug 08, 2006 2:10 pm GMT by Hungry4Knowledge
Bergen-Newcastle Boat 3 Jokers = Jackpot 2000NOK = 300$ twice in 2 hours
Posted Tue Aug 08, 2006 6:22 pm GMT by ninetensuited
what i finally did to convince my mom that poker was ok is....after i won an MTT i made her a name on absolute, and transferred her 100$ and told her, ive given you 100$ but you can only spend it on poker, have fun.
Posted Wed Aug 09, 2006 4:04 pm GMT by killahcheese
poker is different
takes luck to win, takes skill not to blow your entire BR.
but slots... i think thtas like 100% luck.

How can you play 2 hours of slots and not kill yourself of bordom?
Posted Wed Aug 09, 2006 4:14 pm GMT by killahcheese
is there any strategy involved in slots???
Posted Wed Aug 09, 2006 4:39 pm GMT by mindgame
Believe it or not there is.
Has to do with changing your edge from 80% or 85% to high 90's--putting enough coins in to play enough ways that the number of winning combos per coin goes up.
Best strategy? Walk through the casino a don't stop 'til you hit the poker room. Unless of course I'm in there.
