My worst bad beat so far

Posted Sun Jul 30, 2006 4:19 pm GMT by UtrechtSlim
I'm sure some of you have seen much worse but this is one of the worst beats of my young poker career.

.25c-.25c Pot Limit Hold'em cash game

I'm in the room for 60 minutes and other than taking down some blinds I haven't been involved in any big pots. At that moment I have folded literally every hand for 30 minutes and my table image must be that of a rock of the worst kind. Then i pick up

K Diamond K Club

in early position. I sometimes limp with big pairs in early position hoping for a raise but since most players here seem to play any ace I decide to open-bet 5BB and make them pay me off. Everyone quickly folds except for the big blind, a guy who has roughly the same $25 stack size as me, who calls. So far so good. Cut down the field down to one opponent, whom I have charted loose and aggressive. The bonus is I have position on him. The flop comes

J Spade T Spade 5 Heart

This is a great flop for me, since no ace has hit. Obviously Im hoping he has AJ or AT to get some action. I'm baffled when the big blind leads out with a pot size bet ($3). If he has me beat, why not milk the hand and come over the top on the river? Can't be on AA cause he wouldve reraised preflop. I sometimes lead out when I hit a made on the flop and know I'm up against a player who gets married to a big pair with big results, but I never overbet those. However, this guy does not seem very sophisticated, so I figure he's semi-bluffing.

In this situation I always figure out what the worst hand is I can be up against. If he has K Spade Q Spade he has 15 outs with an open ended straight draw and a flush draw. I raise with a pot size bet ($12) giving him less than 3:1 to call. Even in my worst case scenario hes a dog if he calls this. I'm basically saying: I have you beat, call to your peril. The big blind reraises all-in and I immediately call. With $50 at stake,
the Turn comes 9 Diamond and the River comes 6 Club

My opponent flips J Heart 9 Club and beats me with a running two pair that he caught on the turn. I'll repeat: a running two pair. I submitted this flop at twodimes.net and it tells me I was a 78% favourite to win the hand when all the chips went into the pot.

I later saw this fruitcake raising a 16BB (!) preflop raise to 36BB. His raise was called. With a board that featured no higher card than a Q the hand was completely checked down. The original bettor flipped AKo obviously assuming he was beaten. He took it down with an ace high. The strongest starting hand that could have called him was AJs..I bet it was much weaker than that. I sure hope to run into this flake again before he runs out of money.
