Defending the blinds ring/tournament

Posted Tue Aug 01, 2006 8:45 pm GMT by efram
Do you do this?
always, never, sometimes, dependson the blinds, situation, your cards?

I don't unless its cheap to call or if I have a decent hand.
On a rare occasion I'll re-raise the raiser and try to outplay him post-flop if he calls. Most of the time if my cards are worthless I don't worry about the BB or SB out there. I think in the long run I get into more trouble trying to defend the blind rather then just letting it go if my hand sux.

Of course, to observant players, this can become a clear sign that says, "steal my blind please, I don't care about it".

Can anyone offer advice, experience, strategies, 2 cents on defending the blind.
Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert either...
but the answer definitely depends on the situation.

Look at it as the guy has simply doubled the blinds in play. If he's doing it with every hand, even a marginal hand may be worth the call. If hes skipping hands to do it on, assume hes on at least a marginal hand himself. Reraising is typical 'stop stealing the blinds' reaction, which quite likely will result in yet another raise on their part. Marginal hands, call it to see the flop. If you connect, and feel you have a better hand, start working on the trap. If the guy sees a nice piece of his stack float away a few times, he'll probably settle down.

Now, if I was dealt a sweet hand...
at this point it depends on if I had been calling him. If I have been, a reraise is going to scream bail to him. Call is in order, proceed to trap. If I had not yet begun calling his raises, well I think that would be a perfect position to spark something from him. What we want is him trying to steal pots... so hes got a few blinds: move to hurt him. If I'm looking down at AA KK QQ, I'ld reraise. Not a min raise, but not too aggressive either. He's doubled the blinds already, so I'ld raise his bet (say a 2/4 table, he's in 8, I'm in 16 now). If he tries to reraise, hesitate a moment and call him Smile Proceed to trap, praying he tries to steal that pot. Post river, if you're confident you have him beat, reraise anything he throws until he calls or someone is all in.

The size of his balls can comes into play here too. If you're calling this and he's not getting aggressive in trying to steal the pots, then you definitely should be. Steal a few pots and he may settle down.

2 cents into the collection.

In both tournament and ring games, you don't want to be known as a folder in the blinds. So, if you find that a player has riased you more than two laps in a row from that position as a steal, then I think you need to come over him/her to make sure they know you won't be pushed around. I would do this regardless of my hand and bet the flop (if he calls) no matter what comes. You need to set the tone early.

Beyond that, there is no reason to continually get involved in a lot of marginal situations in the blinds. So, in general you should just fold to a raise.

There's one thing I don't do which is defend my blinds by calling with trash hands.
