I was struggling in this SnG so when I saw the flop I wanted to double up drastically... thats why i checked the flop (no flushdraws, or even a remote backdoor straight draw possible) and just called the turn waiting to shove it all in on the river.

I've done the same thing, and honestly felt like a moron afterwards. I will still probably do this ~25% of the time, especially if I have the ace kicker. But that's just me, hate when this happens, but more often than not I'm taking down the pot whether I slow play or not.

its a tough cookie.
But I hate to slow play a small set an especially trips. He the board pairs , or someone else got a set you're in problems. That said, how often will you encounter a set...
The thing is, even if you raised the turn, chances are someone with pp will call. if he hit his set on the river you're still screwed .
Look, you were still 95% to win on the turn. So as bad as it feels - seems like you were making the right play!

Never slow play a vulnerable hands such as trips (it would only technically be a set if you had a pp in your hand) and sets. Most times when you give a free card you get burnt.

this is what i was thinking, there were no straight or flush possibilities at all, so i could only get hurt by someone holding a Pocket pair that matches a board card beside the 8... and thats not very likely to happen so i went with it.

Honestly I would have played it exactly the same as you (with the exception of maybe raising a bit more PF.) If however, you knew this player to be really LAG, I'd fire out a bet on either the flop or turn to get some value out of your hand. This is a hand where you will make more money slowplaying than you will by eliminated the draws to win the pot immediately.

Actually, it's fairly uncommon that giving a free card burns you, unless the board is really draw heavy. If you're afraid of giving your opponent a free shot at 2 or 3 outs, you're a big chicken.
Slow-playing is fine, but should be used sparingly. Some people make a bad habit of slowplaying trips every time they hit them, which is a huge mistake, because it looks so obvious with a pair on board. Slow-playing works best for an aggressive player who's doing a lot of betting, and whose checks and calls don't necessarily mean a lot. When I see a tight player check and call my bet, though, he may as well put a big sign over his head, "I'm slowplaying something big you stupid LAG, I'm gonna pop you big if you bet again."
On a crappy board like that, I probably just bet my trips, because it's going to be hard to get action anyway, and you were the pre-flop raiser. You'd probably get action from the sixes in any case.

You got lucky when you needed to, then let it get away. Take it down or force them to make the mistake. If you push on the flop after your pre-flop bet, you look like you're trying to protect a premium starting hand on a raggedy board, when in actuality, you've nailed the flop pretty hard. I can't really blame the line you took, but personally, I'd probably be more likely to slowplay it with a bigger stack and more likely to be aggressive earlier in the hand with the smaller stack. I have a hard time waiting for another street (or the flop) when I know I intend to push at some point in the hand.
