Very interesting indeed!!

I like the point were he says that the money didn't only change his life, but the life of others around him. That's quite sad actually...

Could you tell him that he needs a haircut?? Thanks!!

Really interesting to hear what he had to say. A lot of us think how great it would be to win that sort of money without realising the downside of what it could mean.

yep he sounds like the way i think about him

Not a huge fan of the history of the game and all that Rolling Eyes

Posted Fri Aug 04, 2006 12:29 pm GMT by supafrey
Yeah sounds like a degenerate bum that got lucky once.

Posted Fri Aug 04, 2006 12:56 pm GMT by shorn7
Sounds like a tool too. I am still amazed every time I see the broadcast that he won the event. He had his money in dead so many times and sucked out (Brenes, Ivey, etc.). It makes me sick.

I'm actually OK with that. Poker didn't have a "rich, treasured history" until television coverage shined it up for the masses. The truth is it's still just a game loaded with degenerate gamblers and ne'er-do-wells. Add to that the new-age internet geeks, and you've got a whole buncha people that aren't gonna be in the social register any time soon.

Well, in his defense, I get the impression that he wouldn't argue with anyone that said he was lucky during that tournament. He might even agree with the opinion that he's an awful player. By his own admission, he was in the hole for a LOT of money before he won the tourney.

I find it only slightly amusing that we continuously slam this guy for his good fortune, when there isn't one amongst us that wouldn't immediately trade places with him for just that one week in 2003.

I agree completely. Sounded pretty normal to me... and pretty aware of his shortcomings.

This struck me as odd, and fairly immature:

Are there any pros who have helped you along the way?

“No one’s taught me anything. I’ve pretty much learned it all on my own. I always go back and look at my hand history and everybody else’s and how they played. I look to see how I played a hand and whether I could have gotten more money off a guy or lost less. How would I play it differently when the situation comes up again? I continuously try to do that. You just learn more as you go, whether it’s pot odds, situations, position. You just learn more.”

Why is that? I haven't learned anything from any pro's either. Of course I suck but I don't see what is wrong with that. If I went out there next year and was in the WSOP I wouldn't have any help from any pros either.

What a douchebag. Nobody's helped him get where he is, 5000 of the entrants in the main event are complete morons, everyone else is playing bad (except him, of course), etc.

What a little whiney POS. Does anyone like him?

this hostility is entirely unwarranted.

if i had to look through my poker "career", i only see it littered with hindrances.. absolutely noone has been entirely supportive of it. nobody's helped me, really.

He might be a tool, but he's a tool with a few million more than me...

Rolling Eyes

Well now - I'm glad to see we have so many omnipotent poker persons in our midst, who have never gleened any facet of knowledge from any book they've read on poker, or who have never learned from watching the pros play, viewing television as a mere tool for entertainment.

Remember Moneymaker's statement "No ones taught me anything". I cannot say this honestly, having learned from the following authors (just to name a few): Harrington, Sklansky, Caro, Brunson, McEvoy.

To me, he comes off as an okay guy who doesn't "get" poker.

1) No one said that.
2) I've never learned a thing from watching poker on TV.
3) Why does this bother you?

How many of those authors have come to your house for a personal one-on-one? That's what I took that to mean. And the way the question was phrased, I'd have answered it the same way.

You guys are wrapped way too tight concerning this guy.

How do you win millions then lose your wife?

Unless of course he traded her for a trophy wife.

Just as you can fight over money when you have none, you can fight over it when you have too much too.

"I wanna buy that new house."
"Why can't we give a million to my parents?"
"Your brother's a bum. I'm not supporting him."

etc, etc, ad infinitum
