My Sit N Go challenge

Posted Wed Aug 09, 2006 8:22 pm GMT by jeffreymb
Hi guys,

I have seen other posters attemp sit n go challenges in the past, so I thought I would undertake one myself. Over the last 2.5 weeks I played 50 $2 + $0.2 10 person sit n go's on poker.com. I wasn't impressed with the competition, and my standard TAG play seemed to fare pretty well. I always played two tables at once, which was easy for me to handle. However, I was a little bit dissapointed by the relatively low number of wins. It seemed that it wasn't that difficult to make the to three, but once I got there I was usually behind in chips. Is this likely due to my TAG play? Of course I played more starting hands when the table became short handed, but maybe it wasn't enough. Here are the results. Let me know what you guys think of these numbers:

Total of 50 games played:
6 1st place
10 2nd place
10 3rd place
In the money 52%
Total entry fee = $110
Total prize won = $160
Total profit = $50 or about $2/hour...lol

I think those results are pretty good... 2$/hour doesn't seem like much but really it should be considered one buyin/hour, which suddenly makes it look a bit more impressive.

Maybe try the challenge again and see if you can beat your previous records.

Do you change your game style while you are ITM?
Maybe you change it too much , maybe you don't change it enough.

I recently decided to keep my tight game in FT as well as top 3. Sure, my starting hand range is bigger - but I almost never limp. last 3 its raise on fold. The only time I limp is with monster hands.
Of course I mixed it up every now and again.

If you limp too often with margin hands, you are simply losing money.
Any way, getting ITM 52% of the time its pretty damn good. Look at it this way - you made 45% on your initial investment! Thats pretty good.
Once your BR improves, and you move to higher buyin. If you keep the same % you are to gain much much more.

I look at playing low level as practice to the real thing. Hopefully, you make money while practice and don't lose too much.

I'm going to start one my self as well...
Its good to keep track on ones states.

btw - does it really take 2 hours to play a 10 player S&G?

Where I play it takes about an hour to play a 9 players and about 2 to play 45 players.

Am going to try to play more 45 players game.

$2/hour doesn't sound like much, but as MrDarling rightly said, this is just practice. If you can maintain your ITM%/ROI% and slowly increase the tournament stakes you will be doing very well.

The turbo tournaments annoy me a little bit with the blinds raising so fast so i'm going to try this challenge with $5.50 SnG's instead. I'll post stats when i'm done.

Those are good results, but maybe you're playing a little too tight when in the money? Some of those second places should be first places, not that you can really make any big conclusions with only 50 games played though. Usually the good SNG players have more 1'st and 3'rd place finishes than 2'nd place finishes.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Mr Darling, it only takes about one hour to play each game. I play two at a time. So therefore I figure I spent about 25 hours to earn $50, hence the $2/hr calculation.

These are not turbo tournaments. The blinds start at 5/10 chips and move up every 10 hands. Starting stacks are 1000 chips. However, by the time it gets to heads up the blinds are usually 250/500 which is a significant portion of the chips in play. Therefore, heads up I usually push or fold, unless I have a big hand and then I will probably limp. Also, I find a lot of the players to be pretty weak, so sometimes I will just limp in and then raise on the flop regardless of what I have when in position. Of course it depends on the opponent. Now that I actually have a bankroll (hooray for multi table tournament final table cash!) I am going to try the same thing at $5.50 sit n go's. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

I like to keep track of SNG play based on ROI and not $$ per hour. The man reason for this is it sounds better to say you have an ROI of 45% rather then saying you made $2 per hr. of playing time.

Like someone else mentioned, if you can keep your ITM and ROI high and move into larger buyin tournaments then you will see more then $2 an hour. Do not be worried though if you see either of these numbers go down. Variance is a big part of ITM and ROI and honestly 45% is a high ROI and should not be expected to be maintained for great periods of time. After you log 500 SNGs you can get a better picture of what your true ROI will be.

I think there are a few members here who have a few thousand SNG logged and it would be interesting to find out their ROI is VS the # of SNGs played.

Does this not sound turbo-ish to anyone else?

Usually turbo tournaments are measured by blind intervals in the sence of minutes but these are by hands. 10 hands can go by in 10 minutes.

Sounds pretty turbo-ish to me.

Yeah, I guess I would consider this to be somewhere between a turbo and normal game. It still gives enough time to get enough hands in to make the tourney interesting. From what I can see this is the only way sit n go's are played on this site. However, in MTT the blinds are 15 minutes each level. Strange, I know.

2nd - 13
3rd - 12
No cash - 20
