High Stakes Last Night

Posted Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:09 pm GMT by Dat_Dude
Did anyone watch this episode and see the largest pot probably ever on television?

In case you missed it (my numbers are pretty close I think):

Gus Hansen (CO): 5 5
D. Negreanu(OTB): 6 6

Preflop Esfandiari actually raised to about 2600 with junk, then Gus called and Daniel reraised to about 6k. The Magician folded and Gus called.

FLOP: 9 6 5

Gus checks. Daniel bets about 11k. Hansen raises to 26k and Daniel just calls.

TURN: 5 (you just know this is gonna get way ugly)

Gus bets out about 35k, Daniel CALLS

RIVER: 8

Gus checks with the stone cold nuts. Daniel fires out about 56k and Gus raises him All-in for another 167k more. Daniel thinks and thinks and says "If I lose this it was a huge cooler" and calls.

The total pot was almost 575k. Unreal!!!!!

What do you think of Gus's River check? He must really have Daniel read and put him on a huge hand (straight, boat, etc.) and KNEW Daniel would fire at the pot. I wonder if Gus had led that river if Daniel would have come over the top? Obviously it worked out, but before he checked, I thought to myself "bet about 90k or so". Thoughts?

Here's another thread on the same topic, yeah, he put it in general holdem, but whatcha expect... he's canadian Rolling Eyes

It's hard to say because it obviously worked out for him, tbh i feel he knew DN had a full house and relied on the fact that he is Gus Hansen both to provoke a river bet from DN and to expect a call from his check/raise, purely because he is Gus Hansen and Gus Hansen makes moves like that!

You can only admire how great these players are...

DN couldn't fold that one, of course, but he did hesitate quite a bit before calling. DN knew that Gus would've only called if he had a 7 (9-high straight) in his hand, so when Gus pushed in, DN knew Gus had to have something better.

The fact that DN did put Gus on either quad 5s, or 9s-full, impressed me.

I agree about admiring how good these players are.

You know this is what bugged me...if DN knew Gus had to have something pretty freakin spectacular...then why did he make the all-in call?.. Confused Confused . Now before someone comes back and says..." You could have done better UAU?"...I never said I could. All I am asking is if DN knew something was up why did he make the call? Gus would have had to put DN on a straight or boat at least to even think or know that DN would stay in this pot.

Probably for the same reason Jennifer Harman called all-in with her Qs full against the other guy's straight flush, in the ME at 2005 WSOP. When he showed, she said "I knew you had that hand.", but yet she still called.

My guess would be that no matter how good you are, there are still some hands that are tough to fold.

That is a very good question UAU. I honestly think the only reason DN called that was because it's Gus Hansen. By Gus betting the Turn when he hit quads and then checking on the river, it basically told DN he was holding the 5 with some other card and Gus was afraid that DN might have hit is straight.

The raise All In made DN think of all the hands that beat him, but since it was Hansen, there were hands out there that he could beat as well. Great play by Gus.

Ok did anyone happen to catch HSP last night? I caught the last 15 minutes of it. I saw GH get mixed up in the second to the last hand with Eric Lengren (spelling?). Gus dropped about half of what he won of DN when EL spiked a K Spade on the river for a flush. GH had 1010.

Actually, they chopped that pot since they ran it twice and Gus had already won the first one. E-dog had a pair, a FD and a gutshot and gus had an overpair when all the money went in on the turn.

Lindgren actually had a double belly buster instead of jsut a gutshot Wink

Yes, but one of those would have given Gus the higher straight. No way Lindgren could have known that obviously.

What amazes me is how well Gus can put people on correct hands. He KNEW Lindgren had a big draw and the only way he could price him out was to make him push his chips in.
