Is this Collusion?

Posted Fri Aug 25, 2006 1:05 pm GMT by rlb2252
On this blog I read, the blogger sometimes mentions playing tournaments with his best buddy online. The buddy apparently comes to his house to play. I assume they play on separate computers, though this point is not specifically mentioned.

Here’s the part: They split the money if either of them win.

Why? Is this collusion? Bordering on collusion?

These, I assume, are always large multi-table tournaments. I suppose as long as the two never sit at the same table, it may be alright. But what happens if they make it to the final table. If they actually sit right across from each other.

Seems a little creepy to me.

I know the blogger plays on line ring games as well. I have no idea what happens with his friend in those situations.

He mentions traveling to Atlantic City and Vegas to play B&M with his buddy. Nothing wrong with that either, I suppose. The parameters of their splitting in situation like this—if it is done at all—is not spelled out.

But if I was playing at the same table with buddies though, knowledge of them sharing their winnings, might give me pause.

Is it just me? Or does any of this stuff make you a little uneasy, too? If you play online in the same game in the same room with a friend visiting your house, are you a hop, skip and jump away from colluding?

Uncomfortable at best. Splitting winnings or being in an environment where knowledge of each other's hands (whether purposeful or "by mistake") makes it questionable at best, both of them are bad.

But, there's not much we can do to stop it. Unethical people will act unethically. If you happen to run into those people, you're at a disadvantage.

Anytime I go to the casino with a buddy or two we always agree to cover each others loses should one person win.

Yeh, it may just be a little fun thing they add in to it for being buddies, but you still have to wonder.

I've played tournaments with friends in the same house, same room even, but we aren't colluding and thus if/when we're at the same table we don't view cards. Seperate tables we do, it's fun to watch each other play, but we both want to win and collusion is not our desired route to victory so we play for real - sometimes though if he's in a big hand and I've folded I'll watch him play from his side, we both pretty much know how each other play anyway, but we never split winnings.

If you were splitting winnings, wouldn't you want to avoid doing damage to each others stacks for a better chance at making big money to split? It makes little sense to split without collusion in a tournament, aside from what Skribbles mentioned.

If they are playing based upon the knowledge of what the other has then it is colluding. If they are just playing at the same table and not sharing information then there really shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

Lots of players split winnings or 'trade percentages' when they play in tournaments. There's nothing wrong with that. But sitting next to each other while playing online where they can have an advantage over the other players is VERY much collusion, or at least a strong temptation to collude that I don't think most people could avoid.

me and a buddy go to the casino often when im at "home" we always play 1/2 NL and always at the same table, and we always split 50/50, but we never know what the other has per se. But we know each other well enough to know what the other has. we also play the same MTT quite often, probably 3 times a week. once again we split right down the middle but never know what the other is holding. Oddly enough we have only been at the same table 3 times and its been the final table each time

Playing online, I sometimes get to sit in a table with someone I know (either from here or from other online activity) - sometimes, we open a chat link (IRC , MSN etc...)
We might talk about a hand afterwards but never during.
Though once in a S&G , someone suggested I should fold when we were two to the pot.. thats the closest I came to collusion
