Hi guys,
I am playing in an online NL holdem freeroll for a $12,500 prize package to a WPT event this afternoon. The problem is, they are only awarding one seat and there are about 700 people signed up. I have never played in a "winner take all" MTT, so I am wondering what strategies might work. Should I play normally, or is it necessary to take more risks and try to accumulate a large chip stack? I usually play a pretty basic TAG game, but am not afraid to mix it up and steal blinds. My biggest fear is that I will make it to say the top 20, but not have enough chips to have a serious shot at winning it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jeff

No thoughts?...the tournament is in 1 hour. My plan it to basically play a normal TAG style, and try to get reads on which players I will be able to steal from with the least resistance. I know it is a long shot, but I feel I have the skills to take this one down with help from the cards.

I simply hate "winner take all" tournaments with so many players because it's pretty much a crapshoot. Because of this, I don't play them often, and non-coinsidentally don't know much about them, but I figured I may as well give you my $.02.
Personally, I'd be taking many more risks. Get involved in many races and just try to build that stack up. If you get knocked out early, you're probably just saving yourself a lot of time.

Thanks, that is pretty much going to be my philosophy too. I wouldn't sign up for tourneys like this either...but it was free so I figured, hey, why not?

Well, I didn't win
Early on I doubled up when my QQ won a race against AK. later I had AA and raised 3x the big blind, all fold and big blind calls. We were about even in chips. Board comes K 10 10, I bet the pot and he minimum raised. I need to remember that this sort of raise seems to always indicate strength, especially from beginners. Anyhow I pushed all in thinking he was holding the K, but he turned over J 10 and I was crippled. Probably a poor play on my part, but I felt I had to go for it.

In a winner-take-all freeroll, I make that call with AA every time. You can't afford to give anything away if he had a K.
Next time I'd just make a bigger PF raise.

Yeah, I was trying to induce a little bit of action, but of course I got the wrong cards to call me. That's poker. I agree the raise probably should have been 5BB's or so.
