Dipping My Toes in NL Online--Advice Needed

Posted Thu Aug 31, 2006 12:29 pm GMT by lwestatbus
After about 18 months of mostly winning play at low fixed limit I belatedly discovered that I had a ton of player points on my site and that about the only realistic thing they were good for was free buy-ins to tournaments. Further, the majority of these points will expire in three months if I don't use them and a bunch more the month after that. However the only tournaments available for these points are NL.

For those who haven't seen this repeated endlessly in other posts, my plan has been to perfect one game and then expand on it in one direction at a time. I've been at 0.50/1.00 FL for about six months now and tomorrow (1st of September) was planning on bumping that up to 1.00/2.00 FL--and I'll probably do that regardless. So that's one expansion.

But since I have these bonus points, and the tourny's are effectively free, I'm going to go ahead and simultaneously start playing these, as well as in a weekly freeroll I almost always qualify to play in (but only found out about two months ago--can you say focused, or clueless?). I've played in six so far, got clobbered in most, got deep in two, and actually finished in the money (six whole dollars--whoopppeeee--plus a ticket to the next level tourny) last night at a SnG.

So, what advice can anyone give me on adapting to NL tourny formats? (I won't be playing NL cash any time soom after one horrible experiment.) I consider myself to be a competent journyman low FL player, not master by any means but well above apprentice. I picked up Sklansky and Miller's NL HE since I liked their Low Limit book so much.

Thanks.

Larry

I'm a bit short on time but I'll throw a few pointers out while I can.
Specifically for freeroll NL tournaments you are (IMO) going to wan't to nut peddle for atleast the hour. Wait for the big hands. In freerolls they will typically pay off huge. I would suggest using a tight, ultra aggressive style for these. The first hour, you will be guaranteed that 80% of the field will go bust. Theres really no reason to make any fancy plays. Try to play ABC poker, play in position, and more than anything: always ask yourself where you are in a hand.
