Why am I no good at NL cash games? I went to the casino recently and played $100 NL at the urging of my roommate, who is probably the best NL hold'em cash game player I've ever played against.
When we discuss hands, I don't feel like he has a better poker knowledge, even in NL hold'em, but, I did come to realize why he is in another class than me. Physical tells.
Seriously, I thought tells were overrated and something only Rounders used, but he was able to read people like crazy to pick up all sorts of pots that weren't his. He urged me to start and its not easy but its something I've started thinking about, hopefully to take my game to that next level.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Until a few months ago, I thought tells were something that you use to simply guide you along the game, but they can be very vital. Thankfully, i play cash games with some guys that ive been able to pick up tells on. None of them really (that i can say for right now), has any big tell, which is what i had a notion of a tell being many times.
You just have to study them, and for God's sake, pay attention to the hands you arent playing. So many times it can test your reading skill because you can see what they have without paying a dime. Of course this is obvious to anyone who has played the game, but it has helped my game tremendously.
For instance, although i think i made a bad play and should have pushed all in.. i made a correct read on this guy. i take pride in it, but anyone who has some skill would have done the same too.
This guy who hasnt played with my poker cronies for a while is not used to raising preflop and just loves to see flops as long as they dont cost him. Whenever i raised preflop like 3-4xBB he would get pissed off because he said it ruined the game. (of course it didnt but he was getting pissy and blatantly said he was just going to be more aggressive)
I had AK and he had already called the BB, so i raised it 4xBB. Everyone folds and he gets all pissed, but calls. Flop comes 10,9,9. He bets, i think for a moment, because he is good enough to slowplay, so i all thinking he doesnt have much. Then turn comes nothing, he bets, i raise him, he calls.
During this time he goes from keeping a poker face to saying "you know, i dont bluff much". That was the green light, and on the river i move all-in. He (stupidly) flipped over an ace like he had the winning hand. He showed A J i showed my AK.
Obviously it was... 'obvious' that he had shit, but it was the first time i had just used someone to get money out of them on such a large level.
Now this isnt really impressive, but the people at my table thought it was (thank God they dont really try to look at tells as much as they should), and i totally screwed the guy over simply because i knew he was full of shit.
This happened when i really tried to use tells, like true tells, for the first time and it was a huge boost in confidence, probably because it was so blatant, but now i feel like its made my game 3 dimensional instead of a plain flat game.

NL is alot about adjusting, adjusting and even more adjusting to your opponents. You'll have some fairly mechanical plays, but when the play gets tough you have to know your man.
Good FL players who get good at NL often get an edge in 'hand feel', atleast that is my opinion. So basically the best NL players combine that 'hand feel' with 'opponent feel' and rumble away.
Maybe I'm abit too philosophical about, but I do believe this.

I'd say that's a pretty good analysis.
Although I think careful attention to talk, mannerisms, and physical movements is important, simple attention to betting patterns is usually enough information to beat most opponents at NL. Manipulating pot size, at least as much as manipulating opponents, is probably the most important NL skill.

The main reason I feel I can be good in poker is because I feel I can read people good. Sadly, I still didn't get the chance to play poker live and test my skills , so far I'm keeping in learning the game and loosing money online:)
