Reading Poker Players

Posted Fri Sep 01, 2006 3:37 pm GMT by FTC Racing
I post this topic because I am not really good at reading people.
I keep losing because I'm making bad reads.
What do you have to do to make a good read?
If you or a good reader and don't mind, please post how you use your skills to making a good read. Thanks

Live and Online

There is a poker psychology section, but ill share some of my basic insights.

Strength means weakness and vice versa.

If someone eyes your chip stack, fold.

If someone quickly looks away from a flop, chances are they have something.

That will be 5 dollars.

Physical tells can be helpful, but often times physical signals can be misleading.

If a talkative player all of a sudden shuts up, it usually means:
A) He's bluffing,
or,
B) He has a huge hand.

Determining whether it's case A or B is pretty damn important, and it isn't always clear unless you have more information about what the guy has done in the past. The same goes for nervous smiles, hand twitching, etc. Excitement can mean several things at the Poker table.

More important, in my mind at least, is simply paying attention to how each player bets and what kinds of hands he's showed down. How did he play AJ when he flopped a J? When he flopped nothing? Does he raise or just call with his draws? Is he the type of guy who will call a 6x BB raise with a small pair? THIS sort of information is incredibly useful and can often turn a losing session into a winning one. If you can add some physical clues to the information about his betting patterns, I'd just say that's icing on the cake.
