When you know you havent played all too well...

Or at least you think you have.

Today i was playing 4 handed each starting with 10 bucks. Blinds at 25-50 and stayed there. I started off great getting up 9 with 19 bucks after about 5 hands. Then I slowly dwindled. Part of it were bad beats.

For instance, i had AK and raised to 2 or 250 total (dont quite remeber), then this guy calls with QJ. I hit my K, and on the river he hits his gutshot. There i lost about 5 bucks. Then i made a ball all in call with A 2.

So then i was back even, and from then on im not exactly sure what happened. I really felt i didnt play too well. I think i got a little caught up with the 4 handed play so i was a little more flexible with starting hand and i played a lot more suited/any connectors. Maybe i listened to daniel n. too much, but i figured i could afford it. I never could hit, so after I played 4-5 of them, i was shortstacked. Generally, if i had no draw/anything worth calling i would fold and lot a lot of money that way. Never after the turn, but i tend to just want to play suited connectors if im the one raising, or im in good position.

So after i cracked Aces (i got extremely lucky with some of my all ins), i then had to buy back in. I didnt consider myself to be on tilt because after ive picked up on certain things, i tried to bring in a new "lesson" to myself. And today, i tried to see more flops, which hurt me. And the thing that kinda pisses me off is, all of the hands i played could have been played. I didnt play anything worse than suited connectors in a 4 handed game. I think i should have been a little more patient, and played to the table a little more (this guy would raise with almost anything, anything that was connected he would raise, almost anything suited he would raise). Aggressiveness is great especially when people will play into it, but he got extremely lucky so many times.

For instance, he raises preflop to 1.75 total. I raise that 3 dollars with pocket queens knowing he plays questionable cards. Then, this idiot calls next to me with K J suited. And first guy calls, which sucked so much because now the odds were much greater for him to call.

Flop: 3 10 10.

He puts me all in, and i fold, he showed me the 10 (before i folded because he didnt want to waste time, shows how nutty he is, but he kinda knows what he is doing as he wins about 75% of the time). Suited connectors could be another thread itself, but my theory is, unless you have good position or sense weakness in others, get in with suited connectors cheaply.

I feel kinda embarrassed because i felt like i had an advantage, and one guy there thought so too, but then i threw it away with some crappy beats and God knows what else. I dont feel like i played terribly, i got some bad luck and played a little looser (probably because it was 4 handed and blinds went around quickly), but im just a little confused i guess.

Ok, well after all that ranting, i just want to know how you guys get over stupid things like that. I dont believe totally in the idea that people get bad luck months and all that, but last month or so has been a little down, although in some of it, ive played the best poker ive ever played, which is a little annoying. Any advice?

Blinds at .25 and .50 and you have $10. You will be a blind 50% of the time. 0.75 per round (every four hands if you just fold)

With that setup you can't afford to be very selective about hands IMO. The key to shorthanded play is aggresion, raise more than you call and pick pots off. You are not going to get a lot of hands normally so you need to be willing to bluff more. You can wait for hands on a full table, short handed you need to get involved.

Consider how often you are calling and if you are slow playing your big hands too often. Consider if you are calling when you should be raising and how often you just lay down when you don't hit. If you have a hand you want to play in the CO or Button raise with them instead of calling and follow up on the flop more times than not. Mix up your play but be careful not to be calling/folding too often to others.

Most of the time 4 handed people will have crap, so the key is to earn your pots.

You raise 2.50 preflop and hit your king. How do you only lose 5$ on this hand? You should of gone bust of pushed him out or the hand before it came to that point.

Also, don't buy in short in NL. If you're doing that, that means you're scared to play at that limit. So drop down to something your more comfortable with.

The guy with the QJ only had about 5 bucks to begin the hand. The flop was like J 9 K. I pushed him all in as i had more than him, then he sucked out.
