AK what would you do.

This happened to me last night.

I was playing a Pub poker Tournament live, after what seemed to be an eternity I was dealt big slick. The first hour was very slow for me, I had taken down one pot and showed QQ. I presumed the table would have seen me as a tight player a bit passive I suppose.

I had been folding hands such as A7o 10Qo the likes had a few looks at the flop with 66, A9s but had to fold when the flop was of no assistance and chips were being thrown about.
The blinds and calling small bets to see the flop were starting to show on my chip count. On my table 3 players had already been knocked out and replaced with reserves, every ones chips except mine had been growing. I still had about 15Xbb. But the blind were about to increase to $150-$300 that would make my chips count about 10Xbb.

The blinds were $100-$200 I was in the small blind. A middle position player opened with a bet 6xbb, there were two players to get through before me. They had about the same amount of chips about 40Xbb each, neither of them had lost a show down. If either opened the betting normally 3xbb the villain could have come over the top with an all in or substantial bet if he was holding the goods. I suspected that the villain did not want them in because they were aggressive players and played post flops with big bets. All folded to me and I looked down at Big Slick the bb was playing a passive game at that time and I considered him no threat. I presumed middle player the villian to have 99 JQs at best QQ. I could not put him on a big pair AA KK as I thought he would have slow played any big pair awaiting a bet from either one of the chip leaders.

Big Slick, decision time, should I:
Call
Raise
All in
Fold

Call, if the flop does not hit then I decide what to do, keeping in mind that he has position on me.
Raise, the likely hood of him having AA KK are diminished as I have AK, he may reraise or put me all in. He may call, I don’t think he will fold to a small increase, and then I’m still left with a decision
All in, I figure at worst I am 60-40 under dog if I get called. He may have anything from 99 to QQ and fold to an all in, thinking I have an over pair. I am getting short stacked and may not get another chance to double up.
Fold, I have arguably one of the top 5 poker hands, should this be a one of those times when I throw it away and wait for a better position.

Decision pending after comment

i would move all in, you are a reall short stack, and chances are you aren't going to get a good hand like that before being really low in chips, or worst blinded out. if he has a lower pair than either of you cards, then he is about 52% likely to win the pot give or take a couple of percent. that is prety much 50-50. but if he has no pair you are about 60% likely to win the hand, more if they aren't conectors or suited. as i said earlier, all in call!

This is not a decision. This is like - I have a straight flush, should I call?

I honestly put this in the same category. You have less than 10 BBs (or about). Any hand you play should be all in preflop. Period. Now you have one of the best hands in Hold'em. I would thank the poker gods I have the top racing hand and get my chips into the middle. There is only one hand that has you totally dead (AA). Every single other hand, you are at least 33% to win. Your chips still matter. Get them all in and hopefully you will get enough chips so that you can start growing your stack. One thing I've noticed is that people often play too tight when they get short stacked.

You cannot afford to play the hand any other way at this point because doing so could mean that you are passing on your best spot to get a hold of some chips. If you fold, now you have .5 less BBs, and you may not see a better hand for 5-6 rounds.

If you really think your opponent has aces or kings (something you cannot know unless you have a rounders cookie tell methinks), you should fold, but otherwise, get the money in there.

Usually when you are short stacked you want to be the one raising. One of the biggest mistakes I see when players get short stacked is calling. You really should never call. If your hand is good enough to play, its good enough to raise. You shouldn't be calling with pocket fives in these spots, so you should fold them (unless you are opening the pot). Here you have a premium hand that should reraise - definately in your situation.

Thanks for your comments, I did go all in, villain turned over JJ, we both got no help and I was out.
I posted the message because I guess I wanted justification for making that decision, I know I will do it again.
My decision was influenced by the two player to my right who were chip leaders and bully ever one out of the pots, I had to make a stand and even though It was not against them, they are good enough to remember the play, noting that I will defend my blind with an all in. I was also looking to get lucky and win a nice pot.
