Limit players, I want to share with you a horrible play I made at the casino the other day in hopes that it will spare everyone else from making the same play.
I had 22 in the SB. About 4 people had limped, I completed, and the BB checked. The flop came Q-9-2 rainbow. I bet out and got 3 callers. The turn came a J. Again I bet, and got 3 callers. The river was a K, putting 4 to a straight out there. I checked. The BB bet, the next player called, and the third player folded. Now, in a moment of sheer and unadulterated stupidity, I folded. The winning hand was Q9 for two pair, and I had to go to the bathroom to splash cold water on my face.
My laydown was atrocious, and here's why. The pot was simply too big for me to fold. There were 3 big bets in before the flop, 2 more on the flop, 4 more on the turn, and 2 more to me on the river. That's 11 BB's in there on the river, and I only have to call one more. 11-to-1. Can I really know with over 90% certainty that either of these horrible players has a 10? Of course not. Note that although I would frequently be beat here, if I'd called on this occasion it would probably make up for all the times I was.
I've stated repeatedly on this site two particular pieces of advice, and I'll do so again:
1. Making "big laydowns" is an overrated skill, and moreso in Limit.
2. It's much better to make a small mistake than a big one.
I think folding for one bet when I should have won 11 qualifies as a BIG mistake.
I'm thoroughly embarassed by what I did, but I thought I should post it in hopes of sparing someone else the same bad mistake.

It wasn't, "oh, it's just one more bet on the end", but of odds being offered versus the likelihood of winning (which included your read on these horrible players) made this the correct analysis.
Focus on that, dear readers, not the fact that Diamond had an unpleasant result.
Although you must admit that with that action JT is not an unlikely holding either.
Nice post and analysis, Dave.
