Words of Wisdom

Posted Sun Sep 10, 2006 10:04 am GMT by rlb2252
Do you have any favorite poker wise-sayings, witticisms, golden rules, mnemonics, rhymes or memory aids?

In grammar school English most of us learned this rhyme to help us pronounce words, “When two vowels go a-walking, the first vowel does the talking!”

Or, in spelling: “You place I before E, except after C.”

A carpenter: “Measure twice, cut once.”

A politician: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

And then there are the more generic words of wisdom with which the general population is most familiar:

“Look before you leap.”

“Don’t jump out of the frying pan into the fire.”

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Are there any poker equivalents, some sage saying that you find particularly useful, that perhaps you utter during the course of a game, that may help guide you through some difficult poker situation.

A game with the centuries old history of poker must have plenty. Interestingly, in my reading of poker texts, I’m not sure if I can recall any. How many do you know?

This post has been done before, but my favorites are:

"It's lucky to be born smart....but smarter to be born lucky."

and

"There was a farmer lost a couple tractors drawing to inside sraights...
but he didn't lose the farm 'til he hit one."

Every time you minraise, God kills a kitten.

Please think of the kittens.

ok, that's mine, but I push it whenever I can. I gotta be famous for something.

But Sean, I hate kittens. I drown them in burlap bags.

"Better to win a small pot than lose a big one"

I tell myself this whenever i am tempted to slowplay a strong but vulnerable hand.

Those who draw to straights and flushes,
Arrive on planes and leave on buses

If you can't spot the fish at the table,
It's probably you.

Never give a sucker an even break.

Your play makes the baby jesus cry.

(ok that last one is just mine)

"Never draw to an inside straight" used to be a common one, I think that's fallen out of favor now though LOL.

Best one I've heard lately is "Don't go broke with a pair", still working on that one.

I think that was Phil Helmuth.

"Luck is where preparation meets opportunity." - Seneca

So if you're prepared to put yourself in great situations, you might just get "lucky." I know it's worked for me, especially this week.

Here's one that at LEAST 75% of the online players live by;

I'll call with my almost suited, non-connectors. I get to see more flops that way.

When you spot a player's tell, don't let them or anyone else know what it is.*

Never tell a bad player that they're a bad player. Talk them up and let them stay a bad player. It pays better.
