Vegas Report

Posted Tue Sep 12, 2006 4:51 pm GMT by Jauron
This trip wasn't good for poker, wife went and had a bunch of friends coming down for the weekend. I did manage to sneak in about 30 hours or so.

Tuesday night wife went to bed and I went to Mandalay Bay to check out the poker room. Decided on the $1-$2 NL game (vs the 2-4). There are really two types of tables in Vegas for 1-2 and this was the first type. No less than 6 callers in most pots, limped or otherwise and showdowns 80% of the time. I do a lot of folding since my cards suck when I get involved in this hand.

UTG had straddled for $4, two callers before me and I look down at pocket 8's. No point in raising so I just limp, 2 more callers behind me and the straddle looks down and starts getting chips ready for our first real raise. He makes it $30 straight and one of the limpers before me calls, I decide I've already got the right price and I know at least one more behind me will call so I call. 4 to the flop and the pot is already big. Flop is 3 7 8 and I'm happy. Straddle leads out for $50 and I know he's only got $60 or so behind so I figure it's a big pair. I move in for $120, player behind me hums and haws for like 30 seconds and folds. Straddle doesn't look happy and I decide he needs a push so I remind him he's already got more in the pot than he's got behind but if he's happy folding I'll be happy to scoop the pot.

This is all he needs and he calls like 2 seconds later and shows me 10's. Running 7's makes him think he caught up as he pumps his fist and yells BOAT! I smile and take the pot. The guy behind me folded the 7 and is beating himself up about it. Thats really the only pot worth mentioning and I leave 3 hours later up $200

A day or two later I play at Excalibur. Game starts out the same way, everybody has to call, everybody has to showdown. I'm card dead and I'm playing my ass off just to stay even. I end up down $250 after I keep running into the nuts when I do find a hand. I break for a few hours and wife and I go to a magic show, Xtreme magic whatever the hell that means.

I sit back down at the Excalibur and I'm picking up right where I left off, table is as well. 5-7 to the flop, showdown 80% of the time. Guy sits down to my right and decides no more cheap flops. I take three decent pots off of him as I flop big every time. After that the tables turns into the other type of 1-2 table. $20-30 to see a flop and action is wild on nearly every flop. Stacks are getting passed around and poor unsuspecting players who sit down are forced to defend with thier stacks every time they enter a pot.

I get lucky when I call with pocker 2's and flop a set. I have two people all in ahead of me and I'm sick but I call anyways. My 2's hold up as both had top pair and suspect kickers. I get involved a few more times but it costs so much to see a flop you really have to tighten up and wait for hands your willing to go with. One guy is cleaning up and can't stop flopping sets with his 9's, even getting quads once. He cleans out a guy with a big stack when the guy can't let go of his 6 on a 6 9 7 8 6 board. A single 10 beats him, but what do I know... this is also a guy who claims to have been 80th in the main event a few years back...

I leave up $250 when the table won't calm down after 5 hours and I can't catch anything, but not before I see some poor bastard who flopped the nut flush move all-in and get called by two pair who rivered the boat for a $600 pot.

No poker for a day or two and then my buddies come into town. I talk them into playing at Exaclibur since we can likely play at the same table and socailize. Table starts out as #1 and quickly moves to type #2 when this girl sits down. She's a complete maniac and I'm the first one to find out the hard way. Buddy of mine raises and I smooth call with KQos and so does she. Flop comes down A 10 8 all clubs. I have the Q of clubs and feel it's good so I keep calling buddies bets and so does she. I wait until the river after I miss and buddy checks to move all in for around $140 in a pot of about $150. She thinks about for a few seconds and calls, buddy folds. She proudly flips over A2 with no club for TPNK and collects the pot.

I think wow and rebuy. She completly flips out and is playing very fast. She will bet $60 into a pot of $25 and nobody is seeing her cards. Finally somebody makes a crying call on the river after she moves all in and he's got nothing left and she flips over J4 of clubs with no pair or draw like it's the nuts. A few looks around the table and now she's fair game. She's playing against the entire table and people are calling her down with TP and no kicker now. Her stack is going up and down quickly.

One hand that stood out was the following: $40 to go from EP, one caller before her and she calls out of the SB. Flop comes down AKQ rainbow and she moves all in. She gets called by the J10 straight and she flips over pocket 2's like she expected them to be good.

So everyone is picking her off left and right and I get involved in this hand: I have A Heart 10 Heart in the BB and call her $20 to go preflop bet. Board comes 10 Club 8 Heart 3 Heart so I have TPTK and the nut flush draw. I check see bets and I check raise all in. She calls and of course has two pair and I don't improve. She cracks me once more when I flop 2 pair and she backdoors a straight on me after we got it in on the flop. I'm the only jerk who can't beat her and I'm stuck $600. I decide to buy in once more before I wave the white flag. Things are not looking good and I'm getting pretty short, finally triple up with AJ after flopping top pair and deciding she had a weak Ace, the third guy called because I wasn't showing any winners and he was sure he had her beat.

I win a few small pots, and I can't get her to call me when I flop a set with pocker Aces. I catch some guy after he moves all in on a 10 high board and I had pocket 10's. I had a hand I posted in the basic discussion board that put me back into the black and a few more pots let me cash out for $1k, only 200 up before the wifes forced us to go to dinner.

We get trashed that night (Sat) and I decide 2AM drunk is a great time to get another session in. Tried the MGM, the table is drunk as hell and is table type #1. I can do no wrong, when I raise preflop I get my flop, when I limp with trash I get my hand. When I'm beat I lay it down. I get some guy with an open ended straight flush to call my nut flush (and I'm blocking one end of his). I'm talking players into whatever I need them to do but most of the money is in two players hands that won't play a hand for less than $40 preflop. I clean out nearly all of the dead money and the big stacks won't play with me unless they have a premium hand so I finally get up a few hours later up $500.

Sadly that was the last time I got to play. I feel I played pretty well for being card dead most of the time.
