is it against the law to play poker with real money at someones own private home?
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

It depends on the state. Where do you live?
EDIT: If you're talking about Serbia, I have no idea what the laws are there.

No worries. I'm not sure how current this is, but Bob Ciaffone did a comparitive study on legal/illegal card gambling in the US. It's pretty cool. It's not as simple as 'if you don't take a rake.' In some states like Florida and Arkansas it's completely illegal.

well ya, wherever its illegal to gamble at a casino, it's illegal to gamble at home too. but if you live in a state where it is legal, then so long as you pay out ALL of the buy in back to the players, its hould be fine....

Not true. In Maine for instance casino gambling is illegal except for harness racing and an extremely limited number of slot machines currently being used as a research study up in Bangor. However socialized gambling is perfectly legal as long as the 'house' doesn't get a rake or profit unless fairly participating in the game.

Yup. And casino gambling is legal in parts of Florida but illegal in home games.
Here's the paper. It's a really cool read.
