NL live last night at Hollywood park, its late (4 AM), guy is shortstacked and falling asleep. Him and another guy get it in on a ten-high flop. Other guy says I have a ten, shortstack says I have two overs. Turn and river are low cards, shortstack throws his hand away and gets up to leave. Other guy flips his hand and has 89 for no pair, he thought (genuinely) that he had 9T. But, shortstack already mucked. Luckily for him, other guy split the pot with him.
Moral of the story: don't muck your hand until your opponent shows you the winner.

I once told a guy that I had 3 Kings (which I did), and he mucked the river before I showed him. So, I quietly mucked and took the pot. Needless to say, he was quite irate, and to keep him at the table (didn't want to drive away the fish), I told the dealer to turn up my hand, but he'd already thrown them into the muck. That guy was on steam for the next round, raised every pot, and went broke, unfortunately not to me. Costly lesson for him.

This happened in a 3-table tourney I was playing in about a month ago. Guy states he has a set, other guy mucks frustrately and stated that he had 2-pair. Other guy flips up his cards to find that he didn't have 33 like he thought but 44 giving him a pair of 4's only. It didn't take long for the other guy to tilt off the rest of his stack.

I see this happen a lot.
It usually happens when someone has been aggressive but missed everything. He really doesnt want to show his hand, so when you say you have top pair or anything for that matter, they gladly muck without looking.
I have also proudly shown a bluff and had people muck by misreading my hand. One was for a $300 8/16 pot on a missed flush (he thought I had 2 pair).

I'd be pretty pissed if someone said a hand they didn't have just to try and get me to muck. Thats downright angleshooting.

Worst I saw was AA vs. KK preflop for $3k. No one turns their hole cards up. Board brings a str8, the AA guy turns over his hand and the KK guy mucks without seeing the str8. He was really tired and left the table in a complete daze after that.
Just turn your cards up people and let the dealer figure it out.

Another funny one was 34 vs A5 with flop of J55, 2 or 3 streets were capped when A5 finally slowed down. 34 turned over his hand only to find out that he had 34 and NOT 45. BTW-this was a 15/30 game-so it happens everywhere.

A guy sitting to the right of me on the river after many raises and caps during the 4-8Limit shows the table his cards and mucks them. The guy had the nut straight but what happened was he floped open ended straight flush draw that he didnt even noticed he hit his nut straight. After muckign his hand the whole table was looking at each other wondering what was going on. So I asked him why he mucked his straight and he looked very confused. Well you can say no longer then a hour later he lost all 200 bucks in front of him for dumping like a 90 dollar pot.

I was getting ready to start a topic like this but I'll just go with the flow here...I was in Tunica this weekend playing some 4-8 when this intresting situation came up and I would like to know how you guys feel about it. To make a long story short I ran most out of the pot except for one old lady. When the turn came I had a straight draw and the nut flush draw so I was re-raising the hell out of it. River comes and I don't hit eaither but I fire away at it anyway....she mucks her cards and I flip over ace high. She then pulls her hand back and shows a pair and the dealer starts pushing chips her way....I raise hell and call the pit crew over there and they agreed with me but the table was furious with me ...it was like a 120 pot though so I don't give a crap. Was I in the wrong here?? BTW I raped the no limit tables te night before for a weekend profit of over 800 bucks! 8)

Did she call the river? If her cards did not hit the muck, then she can pull them back.
Also, why would you raise the heck out of a straight and flush draw after the turn heads up? 70% of the time you are thowing money away.

dave sound's like she did not call the river
so it is his pot but he should not had shown his cards

That is what is sounded like, but if so, no way in heck ANY floor person or ANY dealer ANYWHERE would give her the pot.

Sorry I guess im not being clear...yes she did call the river bet and the dealer says show me a winner...I turn over my ace 7 and she mucks her cards because she thought I had a straight...The dealer says ace high then she grabs her hand back and flips over a pair....and as far as being behind in the hand I always play tight aggressive and almost always bet till the river if i have any kind of draw...it works for me.

Then yes, as long as here cards did not touch the muck, she can retrieve them and turn them over.
A good dealer will grab them as soon as they hit the table face down and protect you from that sort of BS.

I am assamed.....I mucked a winner at Canterbury yesterday.
I had been at a table for about 45 minutes and was doing good. The dealer (Tommy) helped me out when he said "I just never stop being amazed by people's play out here", I said "let me know if I ever amaze you". When he said "no, you play very solid", I knew I could steal some pots.
Anyway, Q9 suited in the blind, flop J88 w/ 4 to the flush. I bet and get called by 3. Turn blank, I check, checked around. River J, I bet out and try to represent top pair. The last player calls me. I show my Q in my hand and say Queen high. He shows 77????????WTF?????? I muck and it goes into the muck before I realize there is no 3 pair.
As it turns out, this older asian guy had never played before and he was sitting at a 6/12 game. He didnt know what a straight flush was and even called w/ 23 and a board of 66443.
I couldnt imagine who would call w/out having a Q kicker beat, and when I saw the hand, I figured he had a better 2 pair.
$100 pot won on a bluff and mucked. I am an idiot.
