1/2 NL at the local Casino

So my local casino finally wised up and added in a few 1/2NL tables :D . I decided to pop in yesterday after class and play a few hands to see how good these guys were. The max buyin was 200 and the min was 60, I sat down with 200. First hand I'm still stacking my chips and the dealer asks if I want to post, sure why not whats the harm? Some guy from Mid position makes it 12 and its folded to me, I look down at KK and decide to make it 40 to go. Its folded back to him and he moves in. The call is ~75 to me and I think about it for a minute and then make a crying call. He shows AKo, and hits his Ace right in the door *ouch*, there goes ~120 of my stack on the first hand.

I don't play another hand until I get AQo from the button, MP raises to 10 and I call as well as the BB. Flop comes A-3-6 all hearts (I have the Q of hearts). BB makes a bet of about half the pot and MP calls, I call. Turn comes blank and BB makes a very large bet, enough to put me all-in. I have about 45 left and decide to make the call (not sure if I like this call but whatever), the pot was fairly large and I knew he had something vulnerable like 9Ts or 89s. He shows JTs and it holds up, damn there goes 200 in a very ugly fashion.

I get up and buy another 200 rack and sit at the next table, this table was full of crazy gambling machines, typical action preflop was UTG raises to 10 or 15 and then like 5 people call. Basically the table was being played like 2-5 and even sometimes 5-10 with these guys lifting the stakes every hand. I decide I'm going to play Super Tight SUPER aggressive. I win a small pot with 9Ts when my top pair holds up 4 way (I was just calling the bets and everyone was calling as well on obvious draws that didn't come), pot was about ~75. A little while later I get AKo and pump it up to 15 from MP, I get called 4x and the flop comes A-T-3 rainbow. Ends up me and this guy go to war and I get it all in and he shows AK, Doh! So I win a small pot but not a lot ~40ish after the split. Few hands later I see J9 from the BB and like 7 people limp in (11 handed btw) I check and flop an OESD and hit the nuts on the turn (J high straight). I bet the turn strong and get called 4x, river comes a 9 and I check (nuts is now JQ), some guy tosses out 50 (pot was about ~200) and I make a crying call again, he shows J2 for a split, not sure what the hell he was doing in the pot but whatever.

Few hours later I get AA and raise from UTG, get called by 1 person and flop comes A-J-3 with 2 hearts, I bet about half the pot and the guy folds (damnit). Few hands later I get KK and make it 15 to go and get called by a rock from the SB, (hes shown several big aces when hes limped). Flop comes K-K-2 and he checks to me, I check and the turn is an A, he checks again and I get a sinking feeling, I check again and the river is a Q, he checks again and I toss out 20$ he insta-calls and I show my quads. The table proceeds to tell me I'm lucky, I think otherwise but keep my mouth shut (get no action on my monsters 2x with such a loose table). Another notable hand is when I get QQ and get to the flop 3 way, flop comes J-9-2 and I bet the pot, get called 2x. Turn comes an A and its checked, river is a 6 and I check, super loose guy tosses out 40 and I make the crying call once again, he shows pocket sixes and I get pissed off for a moment.

Last real notable hand was when I was in the BB with A9o, this middle aged lady whos a rock raises to 7 UTG (note at this point all the loose players got busted and the table was super tight now, raises were actually taking it down preflop and there was typically only 2-3 people to a flop). Its folded around to me and I decide to toss in the extra 5 knowing exactly what she had. Flop comes down A-3-7, I check she bets out 15, I think for a minute and check her stack size.. She has about 120$ behind her and I can get it all if my 9 falls off on the turn, if she has QQ,JJ,KK she'll check it down after the flop call and I'll get away cheaply, I call. Turn brings the money card, 9 of clubs, got her now. I check and she bets 25, I think for a bit and then slide out a stack of 150, she insta calls and turns over AQ and the river comes with an A to fill me up, easily the most satisfying hand of the night for me.

Overall I cashed out for 567 so I covered my initial loss of 200 and made a 167 profit. Not too great but I feel I played fairly well and if it wasn't for my very first hand I'd have made a lot more money, also when I had the nuts the pot got split a few times when the river screwed me which costed me a bit.

Why did you make a crying call with KK preflop for less than a buy-in?

Because I had just sat down and the way the guy did it really made me think, he raises 6xBB from mid position - I raise to let him know I've got a large pair and he just moves right in, spells AA to me and I really didn't like it. I knew I couldn't fold but I mean he was representing AA, is it ever a reasonable play to fold KK here?

It never seems reasonable to fold KK pre-flop...
when you're holding them. If you know the player you might be able to put him on AA, but if you just sat down you know nothing at all. It strikes me in that situation that he could hold AK just as likely as AA and there's that mini-chance he's got KK too. Well, you're a 70/30 favorite against AKo and a 66/34 favorite over AK--a 69/31 favorite over any AK.

If those are the only two hands this guy would play (that is...if you assume a very tight/tough player), there are 16 ways to make AA and 16 ways to make AK, so he'll be holding the Aces (and be a 81/19 favorite) 27% of the time. You end up winning about 55% of the time.

But what if he's on QQ, JJ, or some other hand that's a big dog to KK? Can you be sure he's overplaying a hand agains the new guy on the block? Absolutely not.

I know a lot more people who go all in with poorer hands than JJ than I do people who only make the play on AA, KK, and AK. Don't second-guess that call.
