OK was playing some NL 2/5 at the casino last night and a situation came up were me and a guy got into it. What happened was the guy first to act raised to 20 bucks, pretty standered raise amd I have Q J so I make the call. Guy to my left reraises to 40 dollars, then the guy first to raise reraises him to 80 dollars then it is to me. I of course cant call so I fold then it get backs to the reraiser. He looks like he just got caught with his pants down and folds. Well i was pretty pissed cause we just gave this dude a free 60 bucks between the both of us and I was asking why the guy even reraised if he cant call a reraise to him. This moron cost us both money for a very stupid play that he even couldnt call, was he in the right or is it stupid to reraise when you even cant call a reraise back to you?

very dumb move in a cash game.. for a tourny it is many the time u can raise and not even consider calling a re raise. But for a cash game its pretty silly unless he is setting you up for later

its actually not that dumb if he thinks his re-raise will actually save him money
let me elaborate
say in this example the initial raiser has AA, and the re-raiser has AQ, if he re-raises now and gets 4-bet he can fold quite easily. if he doesn't make this re-raise he could lose a lot of money on a Q x x flop
obviously this makes you mad cause you just wanted to see a flop, but he didnt exactly give this guy a free $60 ... if anything he probably saved the two of you some money in the long run

I agree with the above, you probably didn't have the second best hand, why would you get mad since you got off the hook for $20.
It's irritating when you call for value and then get pushed out of the pot but you didn't have to call, didn't have to fold and the guy late might have wanted to figure out where he was before the flop complicated everything.
If you are only calling you run the risk of being run out the pot...

Im not sure some are understanding what im saying. The pot was already 45 dollars by the time is got to this guy and he raises to 40 which makes it 85. Then the first to act guy raises it 80 so the pot is 160, if you already have 40 in there what is anohter 40 into a 160 dollar pot? That was my complaint cause obviously his hand wasnt worth a shit to be making the move in the first place. This guy wasnt setting me up for later or anything like that, no way did he have that kind of skill in him.

it wasnt limit, guys. In a NL or PL cash game this is just a dumb move.. unless he wants to make a fish image to rape u later on

perhaps he thought a re-raise would make both other players fold and win him the pot.

I think it was a dumb move assuming that the remaining stacks are deep. He was getting 4-1 on a call with position...those are pretty hefty odds to play almost any 2 cards. My guess is that he had a middle pair and wanted to try and increase the size of the pot on the chance he hit a set. Also, if everyone simply calls his extra $20, there is a good chance they will check to him on the flop and he might get another shot to hit his set on the turn for free. All in all, I like the play but you need to consider what you will do if you are re-raised and he didn't do that (or the stacks were such that he couldn't profitably call with his hand, i.e., the guy who made it $80 to go had less than $150 left, so even if he won te stack, he loses $$ long-term. If that was the case, then the raise to $40 was a bad play).
