4 flush board strategy

Posted Mon Sep 18, 2006 12:16 am GMT by rlb2252
Situation: Four to a flush on board. Unfortunately, you don’t have one. Finding yourself potentially this far behind, do you fight on doggedly despite the probable outcome, maybe even raising in the process?

If so, what other factors would effect your decision to remain?

Position?

Number of players?

Your read on the other players?

I would assume that it was for situations such as these that the fold was invented.

Yet still, I’m surprised at the number of times I see a four flush board and none of the two or three or even four players still in the hand have one.

All of the above.

Although I will say, even if I think I might have the best hand, I usually try to play on my belly and hope to reach showdown cheaply. In general, you usually can't go that wrong if you fold to any type of strong resistance. In a multi-way pot, without a card of the flush suit, it is VERY rare if 3 or 4 others are in the pot that no one has a flush, but it does happen.

An important statistic. If you're up against 1 opponent with a random hand*, there's 35% chance that he has the flush.

* If you can put your opponent on an unseted pocket pair (say he re-raised pre flop and the board is ragged) the chance increases to 50 %.

There is nothing I've found that can turn a monster into rags faster than a four flush board. Plus, it seems to my not-very-scientific observations that they tend to reward the weaker player.

But I agree with OP about the number of times that two or three players will not have a card of the proper suit between them.

Had an amazing hand yesterday. Had pocket 3Diamond 3Club on the button in a limit ring game. Several callers and no raise to me so I called on speculation. Flop came 3Spade 6Diamond ADiamond. Hooray for me. Two players go into a betting frenzy and I just rode along. Turn is TDiamond--frenzy continues and I'm sitting back grinning inside at my set. I didn't put the others on a flush since they were both raising/reraising the flop. River was 2Diamond--Uh, oh. Check, check, check (recall I had the lowest diamond in the deck that wasn't on the board. Villian 1 had AT, Villian 2 had 66 (flopped a set of sixes and had me crushed), but neither had a diamond and I won a nice pot. Unbelievable.

Game also. If I'm playing limit and it got to be heads-up, I call, unless I know the other guy is super-tight and would only bet with the A.

I might even raise or lead into him, representing that I stumbled into the flush, depending on my read of him and what I have him on.

Depends on a lot of things, especially the action before that 4th flush card hit. I am with Diamond tho...mainly play for the cheapest showdown possible and if there is some resistance, then folding the majority of the time is +EV long run.

Had it happen twice to me today. Neither time did I see it coming until the river. Trying to talk on the phone while playing is asking for trouble. Neither time did I have even one to the four flush.

Once I won. Once I lost.

At least I was sharp enough to check on the river to keep the risk within reason.

Either be first to bet or first to fold in NL.

I find any one without a flush or only a small part of it say a J or less is not going to risk much more to win the pot, try and show you hand down for the minimum cost. Fold if it get hot, most players fall on these flushes while try to make another hand, I have found myself often staying with a hand when I am holding the K or A of the suit needed to make a turn or river flush, then getting paid off from players holding 2 pair, trips etc. Where I find a bigger problem is when I have a part of the flush but only a small part say 2 to 9, this can get very difficult when someone makes a big raise, is my hand good enough. Depending on my stack, I lean toward folding and looking for a better position. This play happens with suited connector and I hit the flush on the flop the turn or river card makes it 4 to the flush. Its that empty feeling you get as if you have just lost your best friend that tells you to slow down. Heart Heart Heart Heart Crying
