Most important skill in NLHE

What do you guys think it is?

Is it getting the most value out of your big hands?

Is it knowing when do lay down the 2nd best hand?

Is it learning to play your draws to maximize their worth?

Personally for me, its picking up the pots that nobody else wants. I'd say I make more money off that than anything else by far. Its knowing when a player is weak and throwing in a bet he can't call.

I'd say that being able to read the table as a whole is very important. If you sit at a bad (read - full of excellent players) table, you're going to lose money. If you can't recognise that very quickly, you're going to be losing money that you don't have to.

Learning when to be aggressive and when not. Who will lay hands down and who won't and when they will/won't fold a decent hand. You got that you got the money.

For me it is all about getting value out of big hands.

Besides everybody knows that stacking someone = fun.

For me it's recognizing weakness and capitalizing on it. The important thing about that though is figuring out what your opponent considers as weakness.

Adaptation. Adapting to the speed of the table, the other players, and their attitudes and latitudes is crucial to success. No style is effective 100% of the time except the style that can adapt to whatever is happening at that moment. You need to know where you are not only in the hand, but in the flow of the table, the tournament, or anything else.

My first reaction was concentration...altho i think the range of answers that ppl are giving is quite interesting...

I thought concentration/focus because it helps all other aspects of your game, and w/o it, usually everything else fails...I can't help but think of all the times where I thought to myself 'goddammit, if i were thinking more/paying more attention, I would have realized that guy would've folded to a raise", or "why didn't i leave this table an hour ago?", or "if i thought about it more, i coulda milked that guy for more when i hit my straight"

As in Real Estate where the three most important features of a property are location, location, and location.

In poker the three most important skills are patience, patience, and patience.

Discipline and emotional control.

Knowing wich pots "belong to me". Which I guess is the same as sensing weakness and capitalizing on it.

i wouldnt say one skill is the most important, end all, be all skill, but betting is important.

figuring out how much to bet,... taking infromation from other players' bets. sensing weak bets, strong bets. freaking out opponents by your bets.. its all posible.

anyway, there are lots of good answers in this thread

My profits have increased since I have been able to maximise the money I take for the other players.

Lets say I have pocket Kings and the flop is K 8 3 rainbow. Previously I'd of bet fairly big and most, (if not all the other players) fold. I end up winning a small amount of money. Now I realise I can make alot more money raising smaller, but getting a few callers.

I guess before I was scared of runner-runner cards etc.

Now I realise if I lose to that with trips (in this situation), I'm unlucky.
