win a few BB or break even, then lose 15 BB?

Posted Tue Sep 19, 2006 10:51 pm GMT by Mahdrek
ok I'm at over 4000 hands now and just a 3rd way through my 1st poker book
in limit holdem i play at .50/1

lately in about an hour i average 0 to 5 BB's

but sometimes i lose alot like 15 BB's , usually due to bad luck i think, but i still don't have sessions too often where i win this much

is it common to find it easier to lose a lot of money quickly, and only win money slowly ?
the bonuses are what keep me actually making more $ than i lose overall right now?

so basically im wondering if most people win small amounts like 5BB most of the time, then due to bad beats or luck lose more like 15 BB

thanx for any insights, i'm just frustrated cause i thought i was finally over having big loses than i had a couple sessions where i lost 20 and 17 BB's Sad i lost with pocket K's twice in 1 session

I've found that my bad sessions are my own fault far more often than bad luck. It's usually a result of tilt, overplaying hands or a combination of the two.

Look at all your losing hands after a session, and ask yourself these questions:

1) Should I have been in the pot at all?
2) Should I have stayed as long as I did?

Post hands here that you're not sure about, without results to avoid biased opinions. There are plenty of people that can suggest a line of play. Take those suggestions and compare it to your own actions. You have to be willing to view your own play with the same critical eye that you use on opponents in order to improve.

Yes, it's common to swing alot in fixed limit, alot more than 15BBs too. Handing that is one of the things you'll need to master. A 15BB swing is completely standard, I'd go so far as to say that 50-100BB swings should be expected fairly frequently, and truly gross swings can reach into the ugly side of 250BBs.

On the upside, swings go both ways. Smile

ty for replies
yes i do look at my loosing hands, but maybe i should look at more of the session overall too , to see if i was tilting, and post more

ok "swings go both ways" :D i'm looking forward to the swing going forward as much as it goes backwards Laughing

Sean u mentioned 2) should i have stayed as long as i did
do u mean in the current hand or the session overall?

The current hand is what I meant in this context, although you could ask that about your entire session as well.

When someone 3-bets the turn, that's a pretty good indicator they have something and you should probably slow down. I don't think I ever fold this hand, but I don't cap the turn, and I check/call the river.
