WHEN do u know...

okie i think i have a bad habit of not knowing when to move tables or when i should completely stop playing and call it a day. when things are going good for me, i just keep playing until i get tired which is how i do it, but what happens when:

- what about when someone bust me off a bad hand, should i rebuy to that table or find a new one?
- what if the table is pretty good table, but im still not hitting cards. do i wait it out or what?
- what if theres a dominating player on the table winning everyhand. do i go ahead and play or leave?

when do i know to call it a day or move tables? the only time i can decide to leave the table is if its tight and no action. then i know its not worth sitting on.

how many buys in should i lose before calling it a day?

thanks for the help

1 dominating player at the table doesn't bother me. I just stay out of his way until the right situation comes up, but i rarely run into a dominant player.

I will generally limit myself to 200-300 hands a day win or lose.

I rarely need to change tables. I tailor my plans according to the players I'm up against.

This is a really good question. Some of my biggest session losses have been at tables where all of the conditions are ripe for winning--loose aggressive players that severely overvalue their top pairs--but where nothing hits for me. Either I get no starting cards or get super draws that don't ever hit. You constantly get odds to play marginal starters or to call down with draws but nothing works out. A less common occurrence is all the right factors and a player who is too lucky to live.

The math says to stay put. The math says that every hand is a new statistical observation with zero correlation to the previous hands. Plus, you have a valuable investment in knowledge of the players at these tables.

But sometimes the math can be a seductive and devious Lorelei who lures you into a tragic demise. Sometimes you are just getting hammered repeatedly despite doing all of the right things.

I tend to manage my tables one buy-in at a time. If I go through my $40 buy-in at $1/2 limit then that's it for the session for a couple of reasons. A couple of times when I was in a table such as you describe I did put in another buy-in (lower buy-in at lower stakes when I did this) because I'd planned on playing longer and really thought I should be able to beat the table. Worked out well once and crashed and burned again on the other.

I sense that you are playing NL. At limit the issue isn't as extreme as you can last longer and give the laws of probability more time to even out. I have made some spectacular come backs that probably wouldn't have been available if I'd made correct decisions in NL and run into the same hands that hammered me initially.

My wife firmly believes that your luck is tied to the table. No luck = change in table. My stubborn streak kicks in when things aren't going my way so we have different opinions. Of course, my wife firmly believes that if a card appeared in the last hand it is more likely to appear in the next one and also that jacks are a powerful hand because they are happier than the other cards.

So, not much advice here. I'd stick it out and try to leverage your player knowledge unless you are up against a playing style you don't know how to deal with yet.

i guess many people have different views on this topic. maybe i should set up a bunch of rules i should be following through when playing poker... such as a time time limit on each table if i don't reach a goal or end my session if i decided i'll play 2 hours unless it was a good run.
