I have noticed that when I sit at a cash game, I consistently play very tight until I take down that one big pot, at which point I find I am much more willing to loosen up with 'won' money. I wouldnt say this necessarily results in bad loose play, but definately more loose-aggressive than when i first sit down. Is this a significant weakness in my game that I should work to correct? Could this be hurting me in the long run?

I do the exact same thing.
I don't think it's necessarily bad - by playing more TAG at the beginning of the session, it allows for some quality observing time to gauge the other players.

As long as your not playing ridiculous hands like Q 2 off then I don't think your making a bad mistake.
You're loosening up with hands like 10 9 suited or even 5 4 off when theres been no raise and your in late position.
I see nothing wrong in that providing you are willing to fold if you miss the flop.
If your on a hot streak and you hit the flop on such hands you will find yourself miles ahead.
If you continue to miss the flop then go back to your previous tight play.

I shift gears A LOT in cash games, Usually I start out very tight and conservative, then I'll start stealing from late position with low connectors, then after a bit of that I'll get a bit tighter, and then just repeat the process. I think its best to play tight and strong at first to show that your not a fish and then the better players stay away, then loosen up and use your image to take down some pots, then once they are onto you switch it up again.

i do the same. i can remember one night after nearly making a final table on pokerstars. I finished tenth. But nonetheless, after it was over i went to a 25NL table with Leafsfan and another guy who lurks here. within 45 minutes to an hour, i was up about 3 buyins. what does Gid decide to go and do? your right he gets back down to 1 buyin before calling it quits. Good job Gid

I need to work on my loosening up in cash games. I win a pot or two, then tighten up and start getting blinded down. So, I loosen up.. a bit too much and then make some bad decisions -> where's my money gone!?
