Strategy disagreement

Posted Sun Oct 01, 2006 6:12 am GMT by TylerOC
my father and i have been argueing for the past half hour about a certain strategy and he suggested i ask more advanced poker players for their opinion, if most side with me then he'll accept that i was right.

so for example, i would be playing tight agressive, and only playing very good hands and going aggressive with them when i get them. if i continue to only do that, they would figure out how i play and if i get aggressive, then they would know i have a good hand, since its the only thing i go in on. so to switch it up, i bluff a hand, and they all go out.

now he said that i should still muck my hand so nobody knows what i had, because the entire game, he says, is people paying to see your hand, and you shouldnt let them see it for nothing. but i say that if you dont show that hand, true they will still be wondering, but they will already have it pretty defined in their head that you had a good hand and brush it off as that. i think that you should show the hand, as a kind of negative hit to their psych showing them that your not a straight tight player and that you just bluffed them, since it would make them question your other hands in the future and make them think twice before folding therefore increasing your chances of them calling and you making more money.

what are your opinions? would that take away my ability to bluff in the future?

I say don't show. Bluff and valuebet, and people want to guess what you did...they should pay.

I try to never show a bluff, the whole point in playing TAG is to show only big hands to build an image so that when you do make a play you get respect. Showing a bluff ruins this, it sticks in peoples minds and next time the board misses you... you have nowhere to go.

The trick is to be LAG, but have ppl think you're TAG.

if you really only play premium hands, and they also think that you do. then DONT show that bluff when you make it.

If people have pegged you on a particular style, that's awesome, provided that their judgment is incorrect. If they believe you're an ultra-solid, give-nothing-away player, then you can get away with a lot of bluffs.

Unless you know EXACTLY how players will respond to you showing a hand, for the love of God, do not show. Let them continue to think you're ultra solid and just take pots away while they gripe about the "rush" you're on.

If you show, players will begin to think that you're capable of bluffing, and your most effective weapon will be gone. Then, you'll not only have to figure out what hand they're on, but what hand they're putting you on, and it can get pretty hairy if you're not extremely good at figuring out where you stand.

So unless you're in the top 5% or so of all Poker players, I would just take your Dad's advice, not show, and continue to use bluffs sparingly as a powerful weapon to preserve your chip stack.

Like Webby said, the trick is to be loose when you're pegged as tight, but it can also be beneficial to be pegged as loose when you're actually tight. Information is worth a lot, but disinformation can be worth a lot more.

Never show anything. Ever. In my opinion, any supposed psychological edge it might give you is so weak it is not worth factoring in.

i agree with everyone here. the one caviat is that i sometimes show if i'm like on a BB and everyone folds to me. i've not played anything so it's really not a big deal to show as it provides no information. so if it's folded all around to me (meaning i won the hand without doing anything) and i have something like QQ or a good hand, i might flip it just to get the chuckle. in that situation it's a no harm no foul really.

other than that... i'm with the others.

I show every hand I fold and win with...

ok not really

I tend not to show even if its on a big bluff. Every once in a while on a bluffed pot ill show just to throw a little curve or to piss of a friend at a home game.

I never show a hand.

Well, almost never. The rare occasions I'm playing real tight I might show a bluff. But I do prefer people pay to see the bluff. It works better this way.

When aggressive player who raise a lot show a hand all of a sudden, you know that usually they don't have a hand. That's why they showing when they have a hand.

btw, I love people who keep showing their winning hands.

your dad's right the only place i show bluff's is realy home games and thats becuse im there to have fun and at My Homegame people Vewl me difrently then they do otherplaces there they see me as ULTRA MANIAC while at Foxwoods im seen as a TAG Player so it helps to prove my Maniac ness by showing bluff's

If you show your bluff you better expect to get called the rest of the night. I would not show anything in this scenario.

Sometimes I like to show hands that project the image I have at the table. If the table thinks you are tricky, show them a hand that you played backwards, kept playing it bad, got lucky and made someone fold.... for example, if you check raise, then lead out on the Turn with a gutshot, get called and hit your straight on the river, bet out again, let your opponent fold TPTK and say "I flopped a set" and then show your straight. This is the kind of psychological chaos that most of my opponenet have to deal with.

If your opponent think are you a very straightforeward Rock, DON'T show a bluff, especially if it's A-Q or something on a x-x-x board. If you are a tight player, you probably want your continuation bets to get respect and showing some bluffs nulls this. When you're a tricky player, your continuation bets are usually defended against, so don't show that you lead out when you flop top-set.

I also rarely show hands. The only time I do is when I'm new to a table and trying to get my TAG image down. If you're finding that everyone is just folding to you just change gears. If you're viewed as a TAG then just go on a little rush until people start playing back at you more then you can just tighten back up with all the pots that you stole.
