Posted Wed Oct 04, 2006 11:09 pm GMT by easyeagle
I am sure that you have by now heard about the passage of the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. There is an online petition to Congress regarding this Act at

http://www.petitiononline.com/LOGNOW/petition.html

I would hope that you could help us out by directing your friends to that site. Please tell all us gamblers and friends that you know we need your help.

I'd like to sign this, but I'm not from the US so can't Sad

No we cannot sticky this.
Online petitions are practically useless, I'm sorry. The best way for people to help is the write a letter to the appropriate Congressman. Emails honestly don't cut it. Online petitions don't even mean anything. I could fabricate an online petition right now with 10 billion names on it that would hold just as much weight.
I'm worried that people are going to go and sign your petition and feel like they've done their part. In reality, they've just essentially wasted their time.

What's worse is that you used Google Adwords on there? I honestly don't know if you are just trying to exploit the current situation to make money or not.

I think we need a link to the appropriate congressman here... btw, Adam, which congressman am I supposed to write a letter to? (P.S. I think the Congressmen in Vegas were not in support of banning online gambling... could be wrong though.)

I would be totally shocked if this were true. I can only imagine if the online gaming industry were shut down this would help vegas termendously with the amount of people that would flock there since they cant easily gamble aside from their local casino.

I would just be really surprised.

The guy who dumps $100 a month into Party Poker isn't now going to book a monthly flight to Vegas.

I go to Vegas about once a year, maybe every 18 months. I did it before I started playing online poker, while I played online poker and I don't expect my plans to change that much now.

I also don't think I'll be going to Atlantic City with any increased frequency. It's an hour and a half or two hour drive for me, which makes it less likely to be a "spur of the moment" thing.

I don't believe the majority of recreational online players will drastically increase their visits to live card rooms, especially when there's a significant time/money investment to get there. I'm fairly certain the gaming industry feels the same way or they'd have been much more vocal in trying to get it banned a long time ago.

I do think you'll see a lot more regular home games cropping up now.

Bingo on the home games I think, Sean.

Personally, I'd love to see my old group get together and play again... playing in that game for like 3 months probably did more to improve my skill at all the games than anything else. I like playing with the same group (all of whom are better than average to quite decent) week after week.

they probably voted yes... but again, remember, it was attached to a port authority bill. everyone pretty much had to vote yes this close to midterms.

I disagree.

From what I remember hearing a few years back, I thought vegas strongly opposed the online gaming industry. I could only assume because of that opposition, vegas was losing some $ somehow?

Am I saying a college student who is 22 like myself is going to book a trip to vegas the second the bill gets passed? No.
But if it does get banned and I start working, I would def. have vegas in my sights for a vacation.

Just my $0.02

Sal mentioned it before: Vegas operators were afraid the advent of online gambling would cut into their traffic. They were wrong.

And you wouldn't have made the trip if online poker was still readily available?

That's my point: people that go to Las Vegas aren't any more likely to do so because they can't play at home anymore.
