Since we have ZERO casinos here in Alaska I'm looking forward to going to the LA area next week for a couple of days which will give me the opportunity to play a little live poker. I'll be staying in Redondo Beach so which card room would be closest to me and which one would you recommend I try?
I'll have to rent a car to go anywhere so close doesn't have to be the main criteria. I have heard that the players in S. California are quite loose and you have to be ready for lots of suckouts but I've been playing online for a couple of years so having people suckout on me won't be a new experience.
Any suggestions?

I'd imagine Commerce and the Bike are the two biggest ones. I don't know if they'd be considered the best though, since I've never played there.

Yeah, I've heard though that the Commerce is mainly a donk-fest at all the levels. Haven't heard much about the Bike but I would imagine it's about the same.

Commerce is the biggest room in LA, I haven't played there, I hear the low limits are very loose, but it'll be that way everywhere. I've played at the Bike alot, it's pretty big, has a lot of tables, I like playing there. If you're going to be in Redondo Beach, however, Hollywood Park Casino would be the closest to you. They've got a medium sized poker room, I've only played tournaments there, I don't know how the cash games are, but the casino is nice. Also not too far from Redondo are Hustler and Normandie. Hustler is very small, not a lot of tables, but a nice room, and when I played there the players were better than I've seen elsewhere. Normandie is a dive, I played a tournie there, horrible structure and the worst dealers I've ever seen.

Thanks guns, that's exactly what I needed to hear. There is still some doubt as to whether I'll actually be going but if I do, I'll post my results back here.

Hollywood park isn't exactly "nice." Its a medium-size room, but the action is pretty decent. NL is pretty good, be prepared for small buy-ins relative to the blinds. Mid-limit action is pretty weak, 6/12 will die by early morning and the next game that is regulary going is the 15.
Commerce is probably your best bet, freakin huge room, always action at whatever game you want. Also, a little bit nicer in general.

Yeah, I heard that. It would be my luck to have a great night and then get mugged when I left the place.
Thanks again for the info guys.

Sheesh, after all that I ended up not even going to LA at all. Made a quick stop in Chicago, continued on to Atlanta and after some sleep, right back to Alaska again. sigh
Well, winter's coming. Maybe I'll hitch up the dog team and head for the closest casino in Canada. Should only take me a month to get there.
