Losing with Big Slick

Posted Fri Oct 13, 2006 11:56 pm GMT by Alaskadude
This is getting pathetic and my wife won't let me whine to her anymore so here I am.

Is anybody else having trouble with Big Slick?

I've been losing quite a bit with big slick lately so I went into my hand histories and found the last 39 times I've had AK. Of these I managed to win just 3 pots and one of those was when everyone folded to my big blind! Even counting the bb gift, that is still only an 8% win rate. Here's what my flops looked like.

complete miss - 27 times Usually a flop like 3,7,J rainbow and bets and raises in front of me

4 flush that misses - 4 times I played two of these to the river since I was fairly certain I was up against a pair. I was right and lost both times.

str8 draw that misses - 3 times

Flopped trip Kings - 1 time. Lost to a suckout flush.

Hit ace on turn - 2 times. Lost one of these to a rivered flush

Missed flop but bluffed and won - 1 time out of 5 attempts

Everyone folded to my BB - Once

I'm too lazy to go look up what a win rate should be over the long run with AK but I think 8% is a little low. Earlier this year I started feeling like I had lost a lot with AK so I looked it up and found I had lost with them for various reasons 22 times in a row.

I've wanted to just fold them immediately but I just keep trying...and losing.

If it's FL, not much you can do. If it's NL we can probably find something wrong in your bet sizes if you are loosing that often with it.

If it's NL, something is up with your continuation bets or you're not calling reasonable sized bets when your opponents bet after the flop.

Actually, it's both FL and NL. I play NL tourney's and FL cash games and it's happening in both. It could very well be my continuation bets after the flop as I have become so disgusted with the hand that I usually just toss the damn things if the flop misses me. I did make continuation bets/bluffs 5 of the 28 times the flop missed me completely but one thing I didn't look at was if I tossed a winner after the flop.

I'll look at the hand histories when I get back on Tuesday to confirm this but I think I'm folding to most raises when I miss.

Big slick is 2 things
1- a strong starting hand
2- A drawing hand
It's value (in NL) is maximized by raising with it before and after the flop- you maximize your fold equity by making a continuation bet, and even if you are called you should be in good shape most of the time (if there is a 3 flush or obvious str8 on the flop you might slow it down, but I usually will continue anyways)
To Check/Call pre flop and Check/Fold after the flop (unless you hit) is basicly saying you are putting in money, seeing the flop, then folding 80%+ of the time...

There's no such thing as a drawing hand. There's no such thing as a made hand. Please stop using these terms, guys.

thats because supa makes people think his drawing hands are made, and his made hands are drawing

Ok, I agree- the point does remain the same though, the value of AK is usually maximized in NL thru raising the pot preflop and postflop...

No actually A-high is not allowed to take pots anymore. If no one has a pair then the money goes into the next pot as dead money. Therefore, AK is a drawing hand.
