Low limit player trying to cross over to...NL!

Posted Mon Apr 12, 2004 6:57 pm GMT by out_at_sea
I have been playing for a while low limit texas holdem and in the near future I would like to cross over and play the cadillac of poker, the NL Texas holdem.

What is different from the low limit games in terms of strategies?

Please give me some pointers to begin with......

Thanks guys.

Id say in NL there is a lot more bluffing and much bigger pots (obviously). You can get people out of the hand easier then limit because you can bet as much as you want, etc...

theres a huge difference between limit and no limit. in limit games is more like playing the cards and using math to make correct decisions (ie pot odds, implied odds) but in no limit, you throw away a lot of math and play the opponent. there is some math involved but the key is knowing ur opponent. you can bluff more. you can play 2, 7 offsuit and beat a player who has pocket 10's no problem. but in a limit game its much more difficult to bluff a player out of a pot.

I just recently switched or tried NL. Im a big low limit player and can do quite well!

As for NL, I started off losing 2 dollars here and there. Then as alphakenny1 said its about knowing your opponent and bluffing. Im not sure how other sites are but at paradise you buy in with 2 dollars and thats all you can re-buy in at too. ex. buy-in 2 dollars you lose 1 dollar al that you can bring to the table is 1 dollar unless you lose more then that.
That bein said if theres somone at the table with 15 dollars he won quite a bit, and from my recent experience, becomes the "bully" of the table. Ive had my share at being the "bully" too.

NL is an interesting twist if your used to limit games.
My advice, play premium hands till you get used to it. If you dont know how to slow-play, check raise, or bluff, learn it!!

I agree. And I would recommend three more things to you when it comes to learning NL....practice, practice, practice. If you don't try it and play, you'll never learn it well. There is a lot more psychology to NL than there is to no foldem holdem. Learn your opponents, learn to read their eyes, their betting strategies and their tells. You don't have to have the best hand to win in NL and almost everyone who plays it knows this.
