Vegas for Spring break - Hotels? |
|
Posted Tue Oct 17, 2006 3:58 pm GMT by mackkie
I am planning on going to Las Vegas for spring break because you can get flights out there for so damn cheap (282 right now round trip). My question is what are some good hotels to stay in. I have already stayed in MGM, but it seems like we can goto excalibur for pretty cheap.
Also, if i am staying with 2 other people in a room and I am the only one planning on playing poker, can I reserve the room thru the poker room and receieve a discount even tho i am the only one out of my group who is going to play poker??
Any other comments/tips would be helpful. Thanks.

yes, as long as you get your hours, the discount applies.

Somewhere between 4 and 6 hours usually? and what is it, like 50% off a hotel room?
and what is the best way to reserve this room? call them up and request the poker room manager? email?

Depends on the place. It was my opinion that it doesn't matter where you stay as long as it's close to where you'll spend the most time. I think I spent a total of 10 hours in our room over the course of 2 1/2 days.

I would agree with you except for the fact I want access to a decent pool during the day.
I am thinking the luxor right now...
As I am searching right now, it says:
Players Rate $69 weekdays and $129 weekends & holidays on the luxor poker page. Thats pretty good considering travelocity is showing $279 a night for 4 people.

I think MGM's rates are pretty similar, and its probably a little nicer, not to mention the poker room is a lot bigger.

Great, I emailed them trying to get a little more info.
I guess I am spolied by going to foxwoods...When I read that the MGM has 24 tables, I think man, thats small. This is because foxwoods has over 100 tables.

LOL. I think Luxor has about 10

I'm thinking of going to Vegas next year, it's interesting that you can get discounted rates for playing poker. I might have to look into that
Posted Tue Oct 17, 2006 10:09 pm GMT by mackkie
Can someone tell me what kind of poker room rates they have received in the past? I just want to get some sort of idea.
EDIT: Screw it, I am going to book at treasure island for $510 per person including flight and go around to all of the casinos and check them all out.
I do not want to be restricted to a certain poker room for 6 hours per day. I want to go from place to place with my buddies and hope we do not get arrested for public drunkeness...

Just call and they will let you know, I did a lot of research when I went this past summer.
MGM's rates were $40 bucks off whatever the standard rate was for that night
Wynn's weekday rates were really good, like 129 w/ the poker discount, but, there weekend rates were pretty high.
Bellagio is uber-expensive
Ceasar's was much like the Wynn's rates.
Mirage was relatively cheap, but I hear their poker room isn't so hot anymore
Those were the big ones I looked into. TI is within walking distance of Wynn and Mirage, longer to Bellagio/Caesar's.
MGM isn't within walking distance of the other big ones...unless you walk a lot.

That is amazing for that hotel. I am just wondering if they will give a discount to a poker player that plays a mere $1/2NL blinds... I got 2 other people in my room that play poker as well so maybe that will help.
I find it tuff to believe its 129 per night when a regular room there is like $450 at the cheapest...I am hoping tho...

Call the Venetian's poker room as well. They give good rates to poker players and the rooms are all larger suites. They have a HUGE new poker room that even has the "big" game 1/2 of the time. Great location too. Room rates for players are: 169 weeknight and 259 for a really nice place.
Also, more than one player can work for the comp rate. When I stayed at the Mirage ($80/$110 in Feb vs $180/$280 non-comp) w/ Johnnyboy during a work seminar, he played there all day and I never had to-even though the room was in my name.
Posted Wed Oct 18, 2006 4:26 pm GMT by mackkie
So do they make you pay the regular rate up front, then they will credit your account the discount after you hit the 6 hours of play??
EDIT: the venetian sounded like an AWSOME idea until i read this:
Wide array of games available, including limit and no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em; Stud; and Omaha, with limits starting at $4/$8
thats a little above my bank roll...I was planning on bringing $150 per day to gamble. I figured I am average or a little above average player, so i will not lose 150 every day, but still, 4/8 is a little steep.
Posted Wed Oct 18, 2006 6:19 pm GMT by MasterShake
Caesar's has 3/6
Posted Wed Oct 18, 2006 7:00 pm GMT by Dave B
Venetian had 3/6 when I was there in August. They have lower blinds for NL. In fact, they struggled to get a 6/12 game going and only had 2 4/8 limit tables. Everything else was lower 3/6 or NL.
Posted Wed Oct 18, 2006 7:01 pm GMT by mackkie
Who knows, by then I might build my bankroll up to be able to play 4/8 from my excellent online play
I could def. handle 3/6 limit omaha with that kind of bankroll, assuming I win a few hands early...but still $150 is a low for a 3/6 buyin.
Posted Thu Oct 19, 2006 7:09 pm GMT by Phil14312
Maybe it was more like 169? I don't know, but I remember thinking that the Wynn's weekday poker room rate is definately the best value. They have the nicest rooms I've heard from many people.
Posted Thu Oct 19, 2006 7:33 pm GMT by mackkie
Yeah, but im sure just like the Venetian, their lowest games they offer are way above my bankroll...

Monte carlo has 1/2NL and 2/4 limit. their casino rates (thru poker room) were 119 weekends, 69 weekdays for my dates (worked out to about 1/3 off) small room though- 12 tables or so.
Anywhere downtown (Binions, the nugget, etc) will have cheap rooms and low limits...
Posted Thu Oct 19, 2006 10:27 pm GMT by Buffarino
Mirage has 3/6 and so does Caesars. I would pick one of those if they fit your budget. Both have nice poker rooms and the location on the Strip can't be beat. You can walk most anywhere from there. THey're next door to each other. Bellagio is on the other side of Caesars from Mirage. Call the poker room directly and ask what their rate is. Last I checked, Mirage is $99 Sun-Thurs night and $199 Fri-Sat for the poker rate.
Posted Fri Oct 20, 2006 7:33 am GMT by Dave B
Wynn has 4/8, 8/16, 15/30 limit and 1/3, 2/5 on up for NL.

Here is the mirages response:
Some casino rates are $109+tax Sunday through Thursday with an average of 6 hours of play per day and $149+tax Friday and Saturday with an average of 8 hours of play per day. Reservations are booked at regular hotel rate and are then revised down to casino rate prior to check out. Hours are tracked with a tracking card that is given upon request in the poker room.
Good response...Regular room rate is $279. In doing the numbers, I would not be able to arrive at Vegas until sunday night around 10, meaning I would not get a room discount for sunday. If i were to qualify for a discount for the other 3 days it would cost $433 per person.
I could book a hotel at the palms or Monte Carlo for $495. I would almost rather spend the extra $60 and not have the pressure to play for 6 hours per day in order to get the room discount.
While we are on the subject...what hotel would you choose:
Palms, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Luxor or Ballys?
Sorry for all of the Q's, but I just want to stay at the best place possible and all of these casinos are within $20 of each other for price.
EDIT: The poker room sounds decent at the Palms, but ive heard its too far away from the strip and we want to be in the middle of the action...unless the palms was incredible, i would be looking at the other 4 options. Thanks again guys for the help!

I don't like Bally's poker room- it's just a roped off section of the casino floor near a bar 9as of 18 months ago)
luxor is pretty far down the strip
treasure island didn't have a room the last time i was there (2 years ago) so i can't comment on that one
Never been to the palms, but it is not central
i like the monte carlo except that it si geared towards lower limits (always 1/2NL, only sometimes 2/5)
mirage is my favorite- you have to AVERAGE 8 hours per room per day- with 4 guys playing 4 hours on mon you get 16 hours of credit (and cover 2 days)
You need to decide if you want a 'nicer' place (Ceasars, Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn...) and are willing to gamble higher limits for it; or if you want a 'cheaper' place

The Palms runs 2/4 & 4/8 Limit, and also an awesome 2/5 NL game with a $1000 cap on the buy in (I know, out of your bankroll limits, but "just in case" you REALLY tear up the 2/4 and 4/8 games :D ) The Palms really isnt too far from the strip, it definitely IS walkable, or a 3 minute cab-ride (and there's ALWAYS a ton of cabs just waiting at the Palms)
The Luxor is pretty damn lousy if you ask me, I'm really not sure about their limit games, but they have some weird 1-1-2 or 1-3-3 three blind NL game with a $50 cap on the buy-in (wtf is that all about). Also bad floor decisions & some lousy dealers.
Never played Monte Carlo, Ballys, or TI, but I could imagine all the poker rooms being pretty nice with the usual 4/8 Limit, and 1/2 & 2/5 NL, mayyyybe a 2/4 Limit game.
Out of the places mentioned in your above post, I'd definitely recommend the Palms, gonna be loose, drunk play, they have high hand jackpots ranging from $100-$750+, they have random splash the pot every hour or 2 promotions, and last I remember they definitely had 2/4 games. And the Rio is just a short walk from the Palms, also the Orleans also isnt too far.

One thing to keep in mind when considering the Palms and their poker room. Unless things have changed since I was there last, their poker room allows smoking. And it has low ceilings.
Yeah, it has a lot of loose play, but it's a smokebox. Thanks but no thanks. All the rooms I play in out there (Caesars, Mirage, Venetian, etc) are smoke-free.

That's good to hear. I was there about 1.5 years ago and would never go back if they still allowed smoking.

Surprisingly, it seems they actually lost business when they went smoke-free (about the same time as the 2005 WSOP); especially in their 2/5 NL game. I'm guessing that's why they went through a few changes with their poker room(s), such as adding the 'splash the pot' promotions, daily tourneys with at or near 100% payback, raising the buy-in cap on the 2/5 games, and still keeping the high hand bonuses. It seems once again that a lot of the business has returned after adding the new promotions. I, for one, (chain) smoke, so I really liked playing there when they still allowed it. Only a small handful of pokerrooms still allow smoking in Vegas.

Wow dave, you love this place. According to Yahoo Travel, IP for 4 people would be 427 per person including flight. Monte Carlo is $510. With that being said, would you still take IP??

I would book a flight separately, then book the room for $20-$40/person/night. Their website usually has great specials for 3-4 night stays too.
I dont love the place, but it is the best deal in town. Whenever I am on my own dime, nowhere else compares. Considering I spend 4-5 hours/day in my room and 80% of that is sleeping, I dont care to spend $50-100/hour for that one awake hour.

I've stayed at the Fiesta Rancho which I don't recommend because it's not on the strip but in the boondocks. Also at Bellagio which might be out of your price range for Spring Break. And also at Hooters which surprisingly was pretty good! I was expecting crappy rooms there but they shocked me in that they were clean & nice. Like you said I did NOT spend much time there. It's right across the MGM Grand, next to the Tropicana & close to Excalibur, New York New York, Luxor & Monte Carlo. Good access basically & it's CHEAP. Also if you know how to play you could probably clean out the poker room there. From what I saw mostly people who had no real game or clue to it. I played only roulette there & had a blast. Got shitfaced though when the Cowboys beat the Panthers (too much free Shiner Bock) & spent the next day recouperating from my hangover. Spent over $500 partying that night & spent my bankroll so I had to go over to El Cortez & gamble for $1 roulette to win back my bankroll. Lesson learned don't party with your bankroll!!!

I def. found a replacement to the monte carlo!
Aladdin is only $460 per person with flight now!
It was up around $700 last week when i was looking...not sure why its so cheap now, but aladdin seems sweet...any opinions?
Posted Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:04 pm GMT by MJJ
If you are looking for the cheapest rates w/out being locked into a bunch of hours in the poker room, look at MLT's website.
Search for 'worry free vacations' (forget the exact addy)
They had a deal for 2 people- flights and 3 nights at TI for 650 total (325 each) the weekend I was looking at.
Posted Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:09 pm GMT by mackkie
Nice, im just looking thru yahoo vacations, so no poker obligations at all. I decided against getting a poker room rate because i want to play all the rooms, see different casinos, and hang out by the pool and stuff too...so i think it might be the aladdin
Seems like its in a decent spot relative to the other hotels as well
Also seems like that worry free vacations only allows u options for departure from select cities, so thats out of the question for me.

Fiesta Rancho has a tourney at midnight, daily. $25 buy in + a single $10 rebuy. The blinds will tear you up as you dont get a lot of starting chips, and the players are terrible, but it's always a good time. And I won that f.cker tonight..
BTW, Fiesta Rancho is about a 5 minute drive from me, but yeah, it's ghetto.
Posted Tue Nov 28, 2006 12:00 pm GMT by PanchoStern
I was at the Fiesta Rancho for 5 nights. Didn't bother me really but what I didn't like was it was away from EVERYTHING man. My friend lived 5 mins from there so she put me up there. I finally moved out & went to the Bellagio. Just blew my mind!! After that I was hooked on the strip man.

Great location (across Strip from Bellagio - if you get a good room you can see the fountain show out your window), decent place to stay on the cheap. I rarely venture away from Bellagio/Caesars/Mirage/Venetian when I'm out there, so Aladdin is a great location to do that. Same goes for Bally's.

What should i bring for cash?
I plan for $150 a day for gambling $. Other than that I only plan to buy food and booze. Maybe like $1000 total for gambling $ and other spending money?
Posted Tue Dec 05, 2006 12:54 am GMT by Buffarino
Food can be had cheap just like anywhere else. Chipotle, Panda Express, etc. are all across the strip from where Caesars and Mirage meet. If you play enough, you can get comped by the poker room. I got a free California Pizza Kitchen comp at Mirage last time for playing ~8 hours or so. Booze is free as long as you're gambling. And if you're getting worked and just want to drink, go to the Mirage sports book and sit in the chairs up against the wall (the ones that are just chairs without the tvs). Free booze in those seats. You gotta pay for it if you're sitting somewhere else. Strange, but true.

Welcome back Nic. What buy ins do you want?
Mirage has SNGs all day. Many places have daily tournaments with 30-50 people. A quick search of Las Vegas poker rooms will give you times and structures.

Welcome back, nic. The Bellagio usually has MTT's daily. I'm not sure of the buy-ins but I do know they're usually midday. I was there on business last year and the hubby played in one of these while I was in a seminar.

http://www.winninginlasvegas.com/pokertournaments.htm
this looks fairly accurate from what I saw out there. Anything over $300 or so will have satalights. I know Bellagio and Mirage run satalights for their larger tournaments, I am not sure about Wynn.
Caesars also has daily tournaments for $60-110 that start twice a day. 11am and 7pm if I recall. These are deep stacks w/ slow structure, so play on 10 hours if you make it until the end.
