Monumental Monsters of Poker--Round 3!!!!!

Posted Thu Oct 19, 2006 9:13 pm GMT by mindgame
If you’re a poker player in the US there’s only one game left in town and it’s LIVE….so what bigger news could there be than Round 3 of the

Monumental Monsters of Poker Challenge

—Dave B. and Mindgame up close and personal, mano a mano, this weekend in at Resorts Casino, East Chicago.

The poker public has been clamoring ceaselessly for a rematch after Dave and Mindgame battled a year ago in Minnesota and then Chicago—Mindgame, coming out of nowhere and hundreds of chips behind, crushing poor Dave when they finally went face to face over the unforgiving felt. You missed it???? Check again:

Having finished much ahead of Dave at the conclusion of our last encounter I immodestly post this link, my extraordinary account of that sorry affair—but I promise one and all that Dave will not come, as before, an unarmed man in a battle of wits. His game finely honed these last 12 months filleting many a Minnesota fish, his “dynamic poker” now a system even the great Sklansky is at a loss to explain, his bankroll swollen with crinkled C-notes, his sobriety a distant memory, Dave will arrive in true form. Chicago welcomes Dave with it’s most sincere hospitality and thanks him for his generous, forthcoming contribution to the local economy.

Are you willing to sit down to NL w/ 3 stacks of high society old man? I need some incentive to tear my away from those corn fed deliciously chubby Chicago ladies.

Not my inclination to change to NL, but I'd humor you. 3 stacks won't work though, for a buy-in. Resorts has $200 limit and $500 limits on their NL buyings. I've heard that Majestic accross the way sometimes has weekend games with 100 or 150 grand on the table, but I can live without that.

I thought you were a 8-16 and up guy at Canterbury. Our two larger limit games are 10/20 and 20/40, although there is a 30/60 HOSE that sometimes appears on Saturday.

So 500 buy-in NL, 10/20, 20/40. I'm game for any of those...how is that for accomodating?

And you can save the "old man" routine. There ARE old men in the place most nights, but I'm still young enough not to be taken for one of them. When you hit fifty (sooner, I promise you, than you expect) you'll understand.

Dont you know of some seedy downtown club that we can stumble into and play $100/$200 NL w/ a $30k buy in?

Im on a plane in 5 hours, so let me know if I should hit the ATM.

Oh yeah, I know several, but I've been banned from all of them for fleecing the regulars. They just hate it when I walk out night after night with 100+ grand.

I'd forgotten one of the fundemental poker rules: You can shear a lamb as often as you like, but you can only skin him once.

THere really isnt any clubs in the city, is there?

Posted Fri Oct 20, 2006 9:35 am GMT by mindgame
No, nothing LEGAL in the city. I know a few regular "home" games, higher stakes (10/20 mostly, some higher) with professional dealers, smaller rake and good food. Frankly I'd rather stay on the legal side. There are certainly clubs where anything goes, but none that would have me as a member.

I think the real reason Daley took out Megs Field was to set the stage for boats in a few years, but he'll let his flunkies clamor for them and then give in reluctantly.

In the meantime the gauntlet's down and you've got my cell number. I'll be happy to get you to the airport or back to your hotel. You can sleep off whatever damage you do at the game in South Bend and bring your A game to a sleepy casino in the wee hours. Think about it. I mean, what the hell else will you have to do between 4 am and when that plane leaves?

Whatever you do, don't leave home without at least a grand in your pocket--it's about options--you're a trader, right?

A grand? Shit, I will be wiping with Bejanmins.

What day/time will you guys be playing? I'll probly be there over the weekend.

Posted Fri Oct 20, 2006 4:37 pm GMT by mindgame
Well that was what we've been trying to establish, but Dave is being very cagey. He's coming into Chicago--but he hasn't said when--in time to get bussed to South Bend and be entertained at the Notre Dame/UCLA game. Whoever is hosting this affair (a business contact of his) will be treating everyone to plenty of food and booze.

My intention, naturally, was to lure him to the casino while the liquor was still swimming richly in his bloodstream and lull him into a sense of invincible complacency. Nothing better than meeting you opponents when they are tired and drunk. Dave is, somehow, not all that interested in playing poker while impaired, much to my dismay. Perhaps I can meet him, as I suggest above, in the wee hours and we can play until about an hour or two before his plane leaves around noon.

He had contacted me to let me know he'd be down here, so I figured he'd make a big effort to get into the casino. Looks now as though logistics and good sense are working against resumption of hostilities, but we'll get to it eventually.

I DO expect to get in there this weekend, as I had my clock cleaned recently in Seattle at the Muckleshoe. I HATE that place but lost an argument with my boys when I pushed for Diamond Lil's. I need to get back in the saddle quickly because next week I'm out of town for a while, renting a sailboat in Tortola and cruising the British Virgins.
(no not FOR British Virgins...my god, where would I find one? Or more to the point, what about any of this would my dear wife find amusing?)

This posted with sadness and deep regret:

Round three of the Monumental Monsters of Poker Challenge, that storied battle of titans Dave B. and Mindgame, failed to materialize this weekend. The gauntlet, thrown down by Mindgame with every hope that Dave would be able to accept the challenge, was by all accounts run over by a bus full of drunken college football fans. At present Mindgame is looking for a good body and fender guy who works on gauntlets—armorers and smithies of every sort being as rare as fletchers in these parts, their skills in little demand.

Mindgame looks forward to a Round 3 at some future date, although he will refrain from throwing his gauntlet around, particularly in places where it’s likely to be exposed to vehicular traffic. “Frankly,” he said, “I’ve never been a big fan of gauntlets anyway. They’re too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and the maintenance is brutal.”

Any of you who purchased tickets in advance for the event may receive a full refund by presenting ticket and proof of purchase in person at the Ticketmaster World Headquarters in Mozambique (for details log onto http://ticketmaster.com/refund/poker challenge/yeahrightgotakeaflyingf). Dave has graciously offered to refund the cost of airfare and lodging to all of you who flew into Chicago, but for the trip to Ticketmaster HQ in Nova Mambone you’re on your own.

My stomach was too full of beer, Captain, lobster, shrimp, filet mignon (Courtousy of Gibson's Steakhouse and the private corporate tent at Norte Dame) as well as the finest that Linebackers in South Bend to do anything but consumer more of the same.

I would like to say that the stretch Hummer limo to take us 3 blocks down Rush from Gibson's to some swanky bar was a nice touch.

Since I didnt have to spend a dime, it was definately EV+1.

Oh, did I mention the great view of the UCLA cheerleaders??????

Big Ernie invited us out to UCLA for next years Notre Dame game. I think there is someplace called Commerce and the Bike out there. But I dont know if they will have action as good as George was offering at Resorts. Stay tuned for next years report.

What do you say Mindgame, round 3 w/ Johnny Chan at Commerce?

Posted Mon Oct 23, 2006 7:31 pm GMT by mindgame
I'd rather play with Charlie than Johnny, but the money's easy on the Left coast, just ask the guys who cleaned me out in Seattle.

I can't imagine how thousands of bucks worth of free food and booze, California cheerleaders, or strectch limos to a beer palace can top an evening of poker with me. Something's seriously wrong with your priorities.
