How do you beat Micro stakes short handed ring games?

Posted Sat Oct 21, 2006 11:03 am GMT by ComedyBee
I have pretty much come to a conclusion, in all my playing, that micro stakes are extremely difficult to beat.

I have numerous attempts at 6 handed NLH and i never make money. I am not throwing money around like a lunatic, nor am sitting very tight.

At higher NL limits, such as 1/2, is the game easy to beat because the play is more regular?

I need some inspiration because im getting called by morons.

Getting called by morons isnt a bad thing, because most of the time they call when they are behind, thus you get paid off. Just keep playing solid and eventually youll bust them.

I never seem to bust anyone though.

I then begin thinking about what hands i should be playing with and right now im sitting here dissillusioned and unable to answer even that question.

1. Difficulty may have more to do with your play than everyone around you...
2. No. Higher limits are harder. Like - infinitely.
3. Morons calling you are a good thing.

I'm not going to repeat my advice on how to play low stakes / calling stations. Search for it on the forum or through my old posts.

I'm guessing you can't beat low stakes because you're not very good at poker there I said it. And it starts with this post. It shows a fundamental flaw in your thinking about the game, and until you understand that playing against crappy players who make crappy calls is far superior to playing against "regular" players, you will continue to lose.

No, no, no, no, no.

Micro NL is appallingly easy. Getting called by morons all the time is good. Now, you wait until you have, on average, a better hand than the morons call you with, and bet bet bet. Then, profit.

Avoid fancy play, avoid 'strong laydowns' like the plague, bet big with big hands and run over the nits (contrary to popular belief there are many of them at the low stakes).

See this is the principle i started with but i felt i was continually getting in there against a solid hand at showdown.

Do you know where i can find any good articles describing strategy and what kinda hands i should be playing in which positions at short handed holdem?

I have found that the best way to beat micro stakes is to make it expensive for others to call you preflop.

If you are in late position with AK or QQ and a few people have limped. YOu need to raise MORE than just 4X bb because the loose players with suited connectors and small PP are going to call your raise. Make it 7 or 8 bb preflop to make sure only the serious players call you.

You want your big hands to get called, but you don't want 3 or 4 people in a pot with you.

Here's an example from today.

Seat 1: bnboss ($7.65 in chips)
Seat 2: GregElon ($23.95 in chips)
Seat 3: SKY 57 ($31.70 in chips)
Seat 4: dksmith2003 ($15.75 in chips)
Seat 5: iponnet ($25.30 in chips)
Seat 6: westend94 ($13.25 in chips)
Seat 7: bobo62 ($28.65 in chips)
Seat 9: AJK_7EggrolL ($16.10 in chips)
Ju-D-Man will be allowed to play after the button
AJK_7EggrolL: posts small blind $0.10
bnboss: posts big blind $0.25
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to westend94 Queen of DiamondsQueen of Spades
GregElon: calls $0.25
SKY 57: raises $0.50 to $0.75
dksmith2003: calls $0.75
iponnet: folds
westend94: raises $2.25 to $3
bobo62: folds
AJK_7EggrolL: folds
bnboss: folds
GregElon: folds
SKY 57: folds
dksmith2003: calls $2.25

We have a limper, an early raisor, and a raise caller. If I just smoot call the limper likely calls and others might jump in as well. So I make it 12bb to see the flop and only 1 person is willing to dance.

*** FLOP *** Six of SpadesFive of DiamondsKing of Diamonds

Last thing I want is an overcard in a 4 way pot.

dksmith2003: checks

Given my big preflop raise, He fears AA or KK.

Westend94: bets $10.25 and is all-in

The only likely hand calling me here is KK. If he had AA he should have went all-in preflop after my big reraise.

dksmith2003: folds
westend94 collected $7 from pot

Best small stakes advice I heard in awhile. Play TAG poker and make sure to raise with the big hands. I don't mean those sissy 3xBB raises. I mean put some raise in there...make it 5xBB if your playing tables of $0.20/$0.10 or less. Bet big when you know you have the best hand. Never slow play vulnerable hands. Also don't count on these nubheads to lay down even when they don't have odds to draw. They will still do it, just make sure to make it expensive for them to do so.

Avoid fancy play is the best advise.
I'm currently doing just that. Check raised maybe once in a session. Didn't slow play once. Kept the pot small when I wasn't sure and purred money into it when I was ahead...
The biggest thing is - position.
I just played 40 hands - won about 7 hands and only 1 in SD (seen 3 SD one the guy simply min raise to SD with TP , I had LP and decided to keep calling his min bets) most of the pots I won where preflop and usually from LP. I often raised from LP (sometimes regardless to what cards I hold) and if no one opens by the time it reaches me I bet. Most often they fold. If I get check / raised I usually fold easily if I didn't catch the flop.
If someone just call, well, it depends.

I made some big lay downs. K's against an aggressor with an A on the flop (he showed JT for the MP) 2 pairs against a rock reraising my check / raise. Could be that these where wrong folds, but I decided I am not willing to gamble all my money in those hands. However I did call an allin with Q's where I felt my hand was the best. Limped with AK from the SB and took all buttons money with his sad A8 etc..

I'm still not the master of the game. But if I play solid aggressive poker. Don't put all my money on 1 pair or a marginal hand, even when I think they bluff, I make a little profit every session (how does 40XBB an hour sound? - its only $4 in $10NL but its still 40XBB!!)
