Dealing NLHE

can someone explain the actual dealing to me?
Dealer takes pack, deals 2 cards to each player right.
Players bet based on these cards.
The this is the bit that gets me .....
some cards are discarded before flop comes right?
Watching on TV it seems to be between 3 cards go under the chips before the flop comes?
Is this right ?
If so are more cards discarded before turn and river?
someone explain this to me and if possible the reason why.

The way I was always told it was done was before the flop, one card was burned and then the three board cards were dealt. Another card is burned before the turn and the river as well. I see on tv that they deal the three flop cards out before flipping them but there is still only one card burned.

What you might be seeing in the burn pile is the mucked cards. When a player mucks their cards, the dealer puts them in the burn pile.

OK OK here let me clear up ANY confusion. When the dealer, deals the cards he deals the SB then the BB and down to the button 1 card each, then back over again, so the button receives the last card. THEN, the betting happens, when that is finished and you have players for a flop the dealer burns 1 card then deals the flop, this card goes under the pot to keep it from being shown. If players remain in the pot another card is burned (discarded) then the turn is dealt, if players remain in the hand, the river is dealt after 1 burn card. If a player mucks his hand it goes in a seperate pill in most casinos. The reason for burning cards is to increase randomness and prevent collusion or cheating. Any more questions?

and to protect against marked cards also, i believe. 8)

Fat Tony is right. The burns prevent the player from seeing the card that will be flipped next, preventing them from seeing any mark.

nitpick Burning cards are to prevent cheating only, it can not increase randomness./nitpick
