UK Pro Players

Posted Thu Oct 26, 2006 6:44 am GMT by pm_french
Just thinking about UK pro players and how they can make their money from live play. Do most of them have to do the "underground" cash game circuit or is the UK starting to get a bit more in the way of legal cash games around the country (I know there's nothing at the moment in Liverpool where I'm from at the moment - the best you can do is hire private tables in casinos with a few mates and then hope that other people ask to join in).

Perhaps some of them rely on online play for the bulk of their income?

Just interested really....

There are quite a few cash games appearing in London poker rooms and the surrounding areas but nothing that you could make a living from really (we're talking 1-2NL at best here) unless you shred every table you sit at. The other crappy thing in the UK is that there simply aren't enough players prepared to play high stakes because there is not enough of it about to entice them. It's a total Catch-22 situation which they can only really address by opening more clubs which have more tables than the usual 10 or so places tend to have.

The worst news for the UK is this:

"Originally, the government said there would be up to 40 super-casinos but this number was cut - firstly to eight, and then to just one - in the face of heavy opposition."

So do you think (know) the usual thing would be to sod off to LV for a month or so a few times a year. Either that or just stick to the tournament circuit. I'd presume that people like Dave Ulliot when get their buyins provided as part of sponsorship deals etc.

Either this or stick to the "home" games.

Have you read "Big Deal", by Antony Holden? He's a brit, who spent a year as a pro.

I have no experience as a pro, (or knowing any pro's), but I think it's pretty realistic.

Probably not for the purpose of supporting yourself for a year but I would think that most UK pros would head there at least once a year to try and make a little more than usual at the larger games.

There's no way any pro survives on tourneys, even with the free buy-ins they may or may not get. One big win is obviously very useful but not many pros could survive for long on tourneys because there is way too much luck.

I think you are right. And "home" is definitely the way to phrase it because we all know it's illegal high stakes games where there is a rake and the potential for bigger pots than any sanctioned game would create.

It's a seedy country we live in :D

Unfortunately USA has this thing called "an immigration policy" Rolling Eyes

I think the most time a Brit can stay in the USA is 90 days, altho we can leave within that time and return for another 90 days AFAIK.

I'm telling all Americans now. Write me in on the next presidental elections and we can make some good changes. Like allowing UK poker buddies to stay here for an extended period. That period would depend on when they ran out of poker bankroll.... Wink Laughing

Back on topic...

Having had a look at some of the tourneys around the UK, you would have to be crushing these tourneys on a regular basis to pay for your buy ins and make an adequate living.

Some recent UK tourneys:

The Liverpool Open £500 buy in, 1st place: £7668

Gutshot Poker Masters £500 buy in (£5000 added) 1st place: £27433

Brighton Harbour Lights £500 buy in 1st place: £13300

It's not really earth shattering money. Saying that, if you sat. into an EPT and won that... ka-ching! :D

Festivals all the time, which attract side cash games. EPT Events aswell....And online poker is legal here too. So ya know, theres always somewhere to make money, trust me.
