180 man SnGs

Posted Wed Nov 01, 2006 9:48 am GMT by Oasis
Hi folks,

I plan to get my hands dirty with some MTT tournaments soon after having worked hard on my SnG game for the past few months. I figured I’d ease my way into the big tournaments with some low buy-in 180 man SnGs on stars.

I haven’t had any luck with MTTs before, but have had success with STTs SnGs. In saying that, I haven’t played a great deal of MTTs, so I’m not going to be quick to judge my ability, but obviously I lack experience.

The reason behind this thread is to obtain any strategies that seem to favor the 180 man SnG’s, (small stakes - $10-30 buy-ins). Also, if there are any differences behind regular scheduled MTT's besides the obvious difference in the size of players I’d like to know if this would affect my strategy.

If anyone has been successful in these, if you do not mind I would like to hear some of your thoughts on the most profitable way to play them. Keep in mind that I have read the HOH books and understand a bit of the theory such as M theory and the like.

Sorry for being a bit bland and general, but as I said I am not experienced at all with MTT’s and looking to get started.

Thanks in advance and hope to hear from you soon.

MTTs are giant SnGs, but the way I attack those is the same. I start slow, wait for better hands, pick up a pot here and there. Tight but aggressive. At lower blinds, I tend however to see more flops with marginal hands.

I loosen up as the number of players goes down, since the play becomes tighter as we approach the bubble.

On the bubble, my style will depend greatly on the amount of chips I have. This seems obvious, I know, but at this point of the game, it generally becomes all-in or nothing, so if you decide to play a hand, be sure to be ready to commit your chips in it.

After the bubble, I will play like that for a few hands, because many short stacks will push in, just because they made the money and don't care about the rest. If you do get some hands though, make sure to pick up that dead money.

Then, it's time to play some cards *russian accent*!! Twisted Evil

I have very limited experience with MTT and all (three, to be precise) were freerolls. But I have been doing pretty well with SnGs.

Here's something that was a little disconcerting that you'll need to look and plan for. Maybe others can comment on this as well.

In a SnG you get to learn the players at your table and if you end up short handed you have quite a bit of experience with the players that are left. In the MTT you can get yanked out of your table (with no warning on my site) and find yourself with completely different players. In fact, on my site, the screen flashes/blinks when the blinds change so they can update the blind levels in the window title bar. I got changed to a new table and it was just like that. I didn't even realize I was at a different table with different players for a few hands. Also, of course, other players will appear like magic to fill empty seats and they can come in short stacked, average, or as a dominating chip leader.

I plan on getting into some cheap MTTs myself but have to first switch sites because of the recent disruptions and also have a difficult time carving out multi-hour blocks of time.

Good luck.
