My Biggest Leak

I don't think it makes a big difference if you play A-10 suited three times out of 10 or five times out of 12 in early position, or drive yourself crazy with the exact odds on about a hundred other recommended strategies. In the long run, it comes down to knowing when to call, bet or raise with less than the best hand. The fundamentals are fine, but aggression is the key.

I ain't got it, and it's costing me. I can never tell when it's right to make the play, when the odds don't seem to justify it. Yet I see pots being pulled down by others who do have the moxie to throw in their chips. Furthermore, the good players seem to regularly out-earn the weak-tights like me, and they all seem to share this quality.

I'm not talking about stone cold bluffs here; just when to stay in when the chips start flyin'. Is there a school for this?

In a shameless self-plug I'll post a link I wrote on bluffing and winning pots without a hand:

If I read your post correctly I'm not really sure that you are doing anything wrong. The one thing you don't say is whether you are winning or losing overall. If you are winning overall you are definitely dong at least OK.

I'm pretty sure I know the kind of player you are talking about and I watch them and their chip stacks. I think, that for the most part, they are trading chips with each other except for those infrequent hands when I come swooping in to gather up some of the loose chips by just playing the fundamentals. In the long run I'm waaaayyyy ahead for the stakes that I play.

Yes, they disrupt your play. They are in a lot of pots so they get lucky on you a disproportionate amount of the time. And they raise a lot making it correct to fold your suited 98 or middle pair when you might otherwise have played them. Eventually, though, you can learn how to play these bozos. Study them at the table and see what it is they were raising with. E.g., there is one particular player I look for that will always raise with any pair or any Ace. Always!!! I'll play my KQ/KJ against his raise if at least one other player is in the pot and bet my TP for all it is worth as long as there isn't an Ace on the board. Learning to adjust to an individual wacko was what got me started on learning to adjust my game to a much wider range of situations.

Lastly, don't confuse aggressive with good. Aggression without discipline only pays off in a limited set of circumstances.

Good luck!!
